“Parador has great views of Toledo - a bit dated, and a bit expensive”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 March 2012

The Parador de Toledo is one of the best-known of the government-owned boutique hotel chain of Paradores de Turismo, founded in 1928 to promote tourism in Spain. We took a suite for one night in late January 2012, en route during a self-drive holiday in Spain with a hire car. We chose the place primarily for its picturesque location and views, and amenities including car parking, and secondly to have a trial experience of the Paradores chain in one of its best-known and presumably best-run establishments.

The Parador has a spectacular location on a high ridge looking north over the Tagus River to picture postcard views of the old fortified city. The steep, isolated location means the hotel can only be reached via steep, winding roads, some one-way. While ideal for hire car users like us, the location is not ideal for travelers who lack their own transport. Through no fault of the Parador, our state-of-the-art GPS in-car navigator and even Google Maps showed non-existent road access, via a locked service entrance. It took a few wrong turns to navigate the old-fashioned way. At the time of writing this GPS and Google map navigation error seems since to have been corrected.

The building had something of the appearance, décor and atmosphere of an off-season Tyrolean ski chalet. It is comfortable without being luxurious; a little dated and a bit sleepy. The service was easygoing, family-style. Perhaps these characteristics reflect the fact that Spain long ago achieved the original purpose of the Paradores, and now has a large competing tourist infrastructure, including other outstanding boutique hotels.

We had a pleasant, spacious suite with a large marble bathroom and spa, and views over old Toledo. The buffet breakfast and a la carte dinner were excellent.

We found the Parador de Toledo a convenient base for a day trip in Toledo, where we found voucher parking in steep, narrow streets on the edge of the old town – and for an easy getaway for the next leg of our journey. A bit expensive compared to other accommodation options. Recommended subject to above considerations.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the old city to enjoy one of the best features of this hotel: its spec...

Tricky to find by car, but a lovely setting overlooking the city. The view is worth a visit even if you don't stay here. The food on the terrace was pricey and average. Breakfast was also expensive, but the food was quite good. Our room was large with a huge marble bathroom. It was next to the stairs, so a little noisy during the night (my husband didn't notice, but I'm a light sleeper). Amenities from linens to toiletries were average.

Toledo is difficult to navigate by car, so if you stay at the Parador the options are to park in one of two public lots at the gate or near the main plaza or take a taxi to and from town. We got lucky one day and found a parking place at the San Martin bridge and walked across and into town (but be careful of the no parking signage).

Overall, a nice place to stay that doesn't quite stand up to the luxury price tag.

This is a beautiful parador with amazing views of the gorge and town of Toledo. We had a fabulous room overlooking the pool area and the town & Sierra de Gredos in the distance. The restaurant was excellent. One of the best parador dining experiences we have had. Will return.

One of the most romantic and authentic places that I ever visited. Room with a splendid view on the old city of Toledo. Service and food are fantastic

This was one of those totally unexpected moments. Initially we thought with the hotel being on the edge of town, might prove difficult to access the beautiful town centre. (Local taxis were very cheap and convenient). The hotel is modern, very well equipped, with a super restaurant. As the hotel is on a hillside overlooking the city, the view at night is fantastic! We could not wait to get back to the room(up-grade for the view) and stand on the balcony and stare. Very romantic

Room Tip: ask for a room overlooking the city on the top floor
