“Excellent museum, very nice and prefessional guide!”

Convento Las Claras
Reviewed 7 March 2016

I really liked this place, and being the only visitor meant I not only got an hour's tour, but also a Spanish lesson.

Of partcular note: 14th century frescoes and the old ceiling from before the church was re-built - I clambered up and down metal staircases to get close-ups of the old paintings.

Great guided tour to an 800 years convent that is still active. You can go up and see from upclose the original roof top. It also includes a very complete ethnographic museum.

If you have the chance ask for Carmen the keeper of the place. She was a wonderful guide explaining everything as we went along the choir, the church, the ethnographic museum. Very interesting

We turned up here, on the E edge of Salamanca old town, just before lunchtime closing. It seemed locked up so we turned away, only to be called back by a lady who took us on a personal guided tour. She didn't speak any English or French but was so expressive that we understood most of what she said. It's a fascinating place with a great mixture of styles and exhibits. The highlight was up above the domed ceiling of the church, seeing the original wooden roof (2 layers) and quirky paintings. Superb value at €3 each and I gave her another €5 towards the restoration fund, it was so interesting. NB: the name of the place is Convento de Santa Clara, not Las Claras.

Nice exterior but not much to see inside as it is the local library' not sure why this is on the must list
