Eventually we went to Montserrat and you should go too! It´s hard to explain the grand mountins and the views, you have to see for yourself. We where probably very lucky with the transport and had just very short waiting times between trains. There are a lot of helpful websites with information, but you can go to Placa Espanya and take it from there. During tourist season they have a really well organized way of helping you to get the right ticket and train. We choose the 26 Euro ticket with transportation all the way up (train+train+funicular+an introduction film on site) The more expensive one includes a meal too. But there are a number of restaurants and cafés to choose between.
We where lucky with the weather, but always check it out in advance.
We enjoyed the exhibition at the top of the funicular very much, it gave us the history of the place. The buildings aren´t that old really, so if you are very much into old churches and historic places you can find as interesting sites in the city of Barcelona or elsewhere. But the views themselves are worth a day-trip!
For people who enjoy an active holiday there are hiking, bicycling and mountin climbing.

A very worthwhile trip, but try not to do it on a Sunday. Then it is crowdy, noisy, bus tourist etc. The monastery and basilica, kept in impeccable condition, are enclosed by the unusually shaped mountain around it, the color of the buildings blending well into the mountains. If you can make it a entire day ad go for a brisk hike. .

So terribly disappointed in this excursion. The setting is beautiful but the whole place is just packed with people. There is no sense of spirituality. I found the church to be huge and gaudy.

The prettiest, most peaceful area was a tiny bit of the 14th c. Gothic cloister that most people probably blow by.
The boys' choir was EXCELLENT but it was hard to relax and enjoy it with all the photo and video taking. I agree that they should prohibit this-it would go a long way to making it enjoyable.

The funicular was easy, and we easily parked right there. If you are coming by car, I highly recommend this.

I guess if Barcelona is hot and you want to get out of the city, this might be OK but be ready to be with your 2000 new best friends. There might be some nice hikes further down the mountain but from the Monastery itself they are paved a lot of the way and crowded.

Drove up by car, absolutely incredible experience, although it is a long drive from Barcelona, it is definitely worth going!! A truly unique place with an amazing atmosphere. Recommendable for everyone visiting Barcelona.

It was wonderful to see something outside of the city. The monastery is very attractive in a lovely setting. The drive was very enjoyable. We were fortunate to have an excellent tour guide. Our tour took 4 hours, including 2 hours on the road.
