Eventually we went to Montserrat and you should go too! It´s hard to explain the grand mountins and the views, you have to see for yourself. We where probably very lucky with the transport and had just very short waiting times between trains. There are a lot of helpful websites with information, but you can go to Placa Espanya and take it from there. During tourist season they have a really well organized way of helping you to get the right ticket and train. We choose the 26 Euro ticket with transportation all the way up (train+train+funicular+an introduction film on site) The more expensive one includes a meal too. But there are a number of restaurants and cafés to choose between.
We where lucky with the weather, but always check it out in advance.
We enjoyed the exhibition at the top of the funicular very much, it gave us the history of the place. The buildings aren´t that old really, so if you are very much into old churches and historic places you can find as interesting sites in the city of Barcelona or elsewhere. But the views themselves are worth a day-trip!
For people who enjoy an active holiday there are hiking, bicycling and mountin climbing.
