Stopped in for a bite on a walk by. The zucchini flower appy was ok - not fab a bit too much batter for our liking. The pastas however were great. Local dishes that really gave you the sense you were eating a unique dish highlighting the region. The service was kind and attentive.

I was visiting southern Italy with my husband, sister and brother and we stayed in Matera. We chose Il Cantuccio because both the guidebook we were using and our hotel recommended it. As other reviews have mentioned, it was a small, intimate space and the tables all filled as the evening progressed. We loved talking to one of the owners, Vito Michele, who ws also our waiter. He spoke so passionately about the food of the region and helped us order. Understanding a little bit about the region and its specialities really enhanced our dining experience. All the dishes were really good, beautifully prepared and presented. We especially enjoyed the antipasto dish which was a sampling of items on the menu. This was one of the really special places we ate in Italy.

This was one of my favorite dinner experiences. This is a small, intimate restaurant where you are likely to be served by one of the owner-chefs, as we were. He will likely suggest things that are not necessarily on the menu. The owner was charming and attentive, and we decided to just let him choose something for us. We had a delicious plate of unusual antipasto appetizers, including something with pumpkin. This was followed by two different pastas, one using a kind of local peppers and sausages - both were excellent. We had homemade fennel liquor at the end of the meal (we spent the rest of our time in Italy trying to locate something like it in a shop, but never found anything to match it). We sat in an upstairs alcove overlooking the main part of the restaurant, which provided a relaxing, no-rush experience. Plan to spend some time here - it is not a fast dining kind of place.

Il Cantuccio is a charming and lively authentic Italian restaurant with incredible food and phenomenal service. The restaurant is run exclusively by the owner and the chef. As you can imagine, this requires a great deal of multi-tasking. The owner serves as the waiter, bartender, hostess and buses the tables. I say all this to say do not go here if you are in a hurry but if you are wanting an amazing meal with gracious service look no further than, Il Cantuccio. In our multiple times in various parts of Italy this has been one of our favorite restaurant experiences.

After spending the last three nights eating wonderful meals for 40 euros or less, we stopped in here. Mistake. The cook is using every shortcut to make cheap dishes. Iceburg lettuce - in Italy. I had a soup and had salami cut in at the end as 'sausage' in my bean soup. Avoid this place. It was the most expensive meal of past two weeks and local dishes very poorly made.
