Matera has been on my bucket list for many years now and I finally made the trip in April 2017. And I am so glad about my decision to stay at Basiliani Hotel as it provided the perfect base to explore the Matera Sassi and it also gave my husband and I a very unique opportunity to stay in a cave hotel. Matera is such an amazing and enchanting old town with a rich history, and my stay was made all the more memorable by Basiliani. The overall experience was just perfect!
I booked my room directly with the hotel and from the first point of contact, the experience has been great and communication was forthcoming. The hotel gave very clear instructions on how to get to the hotel and if you are going by car, they also offer information on where to park and a pick-up service as well! Matera town is quite small and parking is very limited, so if you are going by car, you will have to park outside of Matera but it's a small inconvenience since Basiliani will pick you up from the parking area.
Since Basiliani is a cave hotel, the rooms are spread out over several cave units, each with slightly different configuration and size, and also some requiring stairs to get to. The reception and breakfast area is located together and is just a few steps away from the rooms. A very good buffet breakfast is served there.
I had chosen a room that faces the Murgia hills and the view was simply fantastic! The room was huge at 40sqm and came with a loft with 2 single beds. The décor is modern and minimalist but the room comes with everything you will need for a very comfortable stay. The bed was super comfy and Wifi was strong. The thing to note is that the heating system is centrally controlled at the front desk, so if you think you will need to have the heating system turned on (when staying in winter), you will need to let the reception know. The April nights were pretty chilly there but we never needed the heater at all as the room seems to hold a rather constant temperature most of the time.
I absolutely love where Basiliani is located as I am always overwhelmed by the gorgeous views of the ravine and Murgia every day when I step outside of my room (oh the view!). It is also easy to get to the other parts of town via a back stairway or just by talking a leisurely stroll towards the Chiesa di San Pietro Caveoso. There are also plenty of good restaurants nearby so no worries about food.
I would absolutely recommend Basiliani to anyone who's thinking of staying there while they are in Matera. Heck, I would stay there again when I go back to Matera the next time!
