We really enjoyed our stay in this hotel. The room was great with a large kitchen / eating area, bath and a very nice bedroom with a balcony with a view of the north side of Matera. There was also an excellent common use balcony with a similar view.

The access to most hotels situated in this part of old Matera is a little tricky, parking is not allowed and access is only available from 1 PM - 5 PM. You have to get parking outside the controlled are and walk or take a cab back to the hotels. Walking back would in most cases be 15 - 30 min depending on parking and hotel locations.

However, with that in mind, I would still recommend a stay in "Old" Matera as a must.
Once we got settled it was fantastic. Close to most of the sites to visit and close to some great restaurants.

Our hotel host was very friendly and helpful, made our brief stay even more enjoyable. He arranged dinner reservations at a location he recommended and the owner of the restaurant played the piano for a brief period during our dinner, very memorable.

Room Tip: Ground floor room of reception is excellent!

We spent 2 nights at this hotel in late June, and to be honest chose it only because others were already full when we were making our bookings for our holiday (in January ... a forewarning to book early for Matera!) While this hotel is in a wonderful position to explore this amazing town, this 'hotel' let itself down in so many ways, that could so easily be fixed! We agree with other comments about the parking - the receptionist was less than helpful. The hotel is not easy to find, and once found and you have climbed all those stairs with your luggage the last thing you want to hear is that the secure parking is more than a kilometre away - and no offer of any help with transport etc (which we would happily have paid for!) We knew parking was going to be an issue, but in our correspondence with the hotel prior to our arrival they had made it very clear that parking was available 10 minutes from the hotel. We ended up parking on the street just above the sassi - not secure, but fine (but quite a walk up!!) The room itself, in a cave, was very large - but for the price very basic. And it's the little things that count - we had to ask for a pillow case for one of the pillows, the towels were clean but still a little damp, the breakfast was poor (one morning the croissants were stale, obviously left overs from the day before.) Wifi virtually non-existent, and only available in courtyard, directly outside office area. (We were told this was because of the thick walls of the hotel, yet we could get the signal from other nearby hotels, but not from ours!) And as we checked out we realised that the gentleman we had seen a few times standing in the courtyard was actually the owner, and it was his son in the office. Yet at no time was there any welcome, 'good day', or hospitality shown. And we speak some Italian too! Such a shame - with just a little bit more effort from the owners this really could be a lovely little hotel.

Matera is a curious place. It is an interesting experience to sleep in a cave, albeit a slightly damp and dusty one.
We arrived after lunch and were told (in perfectly good English) to go away until the English speaker arrived at 3.30 (she works for two hours & then leaves again). When she arrived she told us - politely- that we had to remove our car from the UNESCO area, look for a park about 2km away & come back. She graciously said we could bring our bags up the (100) stairs before doing so. After we expressed incredulity at this, she said we could hire a company to come and take the car away. In addition to the cost of E20, this involved handing the rental car over to an unauthorised driver.
None of this aggravation need have occurred if the proprietor had a less contemptuous attitude to her clients.

I spent 2 nights in this very nice B&B in the center of Sassi di Matera. We had a nice experience as since the arrival we received a very warm service. Unfortunately the reception is open only in specific day & afternoon timings and this makes it slightly more difficult to arrange the arrival and depart.
We got a grotta room, which is exciting as you sleep in one of the old grotto used by Matera residents until the second world war. However, the room was very dark with little light and very humid.
Breakfast they served was ok but open only until 10am which was too early for our habits.
Note that parking was not allowed in the B&B area so we had to park in a suggested parking 1.5km far from the B&B and no pickup service from the parking was offered.
We find the prices aligned with Matera's high prices, but probably it was not a very good deal. You might find better deal in Hotels located in the same area.

There was someone walking around Matera helping people find their way, and that is how we located this excellent B & B that we had previously booked online. Matera is so unique that once you get there you understand why it is hard to find things, at first.

The receptionist and owners were very helpful to us, in advice for places to eat dinner (two really good restaurants very close), and in getting us to Ferrandina by taxi so that we could catch the morning train, and in having early breakfast ready for us. Our room was large and modern, yet very cozy, especially when you were lying in bed.

Location is excellent for exploring the Sassi, but central enough that you can easily walk to the other one. Visit one of the museums that let's you see what living in a sassi was really like!
