Don't stay anywhere else in Matera. The cave rooms are impeccable, tastefully decorated and spotless clean. The views are magical and the breakfast is beyond words, arguably one of the best breakfast spreads I have seen in over ten years of travel across 4 corners of Italy.

Do your research on how to get to the exact location of this hotel before your leave - driving within Matera is not possible due to the restrictions. The hotel is in the restricted driving area you are however allowed in and out once to drop off and pick up they will garage the car for a fee... if you book on a booking site you will not know this as you have no contact with the hotel itself. Do not trust google maps to get you to this hotel. You will end up with more than one fine for going into restricted area due to the instructions from google maps. Tomtom proved invaluable. Beware the fines for unauthorised access to restricted areas if following Google. Im sure we have at least 2 or 3 to deal with and that left a bad taste in our mouths for what should have been amazing...

You must go to Matera. UNESCO world heritage site for very good reasons. Absolutely diabolical driving within Matera but worth the pain. Do not trust google maps to get you to this hotel. You will end up with a "walk from here" instruction. Tomtom proved invaluable.
Beware the fines for unauthorised access to restricted areas if following Google.
Matera is not friendly to moblility impaired visitors but offers an incredible experience to those able to cope with stairs, slippery narrow paths, stairs, cobbles & stairs.
The whole Stassi area is excavated from the rock & external facades are of the excavated stone. The hotel is on several levels & an elevator gives partial access to upper stories but you may still have to negotiate external paths & stairs cut into the rock. Our rooms were comfortable with good facilities but those accustomed to wrap around glazing may feel a little claustrophobic.Breakfast room & bar adjacent to reception.
The hotel has a sub-terrainian grotto with an extended pool & saunas. Very charming. Excellent staff will arrange for your car to be garaged (about 20 Euro/nt).
Make sure that you get out with your camera when night falls. The views will blow you away.

Room Tip: You have to be mobile. Heaven help you if you have lots of luggage

We booked this hotel for one night, and also booked a 2 hour session in the spa.

In advance of our stay, the hotel sent us email giving detailed directions on how to drive to the entrance. Google maps also got us there. The route is very narrow at times, but was passable in our rental car.

Once we were there, we happily availed ourselves of the offered valet parking, where someone would take our car off to a garage and bring it back when we wanted to leave. As we were soon to discover, navigating around Matera is pretty tricky. Even on foot, we got lost several times in the Sassi area.

I booked a "junior suite" online; the website said it was a few meters from the hotel. I thought it would be a block away or something, but instead it was down a very short outside corridor. The outside corridor, which formed a kind of terrace outside our room, provided magnificent views of the Sassi.

Inside our cave room was a thoroughly charming space, with very high ceilings. It also had a modern bathroom and wifi. Everything was exactly as pictured on the website.

The breakfast buffet offered a very large selection of cakes and pastries, plus the usual other breakfast things (yogurt, cheese, etc.).

We took our spa session in the middle of a rainy afternoon. It is 20 euros per person. We are not really spa people, but we wanted to swim in the cave pool. Although initially I thought it was a former Roman spa, now I realize it is "in the style of" a Roman spa. All the different spa rooms (dry heat, moist heat, pool, etc.) had Roman names. The pool seems to be in what used to be cisterns for storing water, which I guess is as interesting as a former Roman spa.

We snickered a bit at the chromatherapy, where you are supposed to lounge in a room with constantly changing colored lights. Psychedelic man! But it made some nice pictures.

The sauna/steam rooms were much too hot for us. I know some people like that, but it's not for us. Even the pool - which was called the frigidarium - was warmer than we would have liked. A sign on it said it was 30 C (86 F) and I can believe it.

The pool was atmospherically lit, and if you swim or walk to the end of it, there is a whirlpool that you turn on with a button. The entire pool has water no more than 4-5 feet (~1.4 m) deep, so although you can swim in it, non-swimmers can just walk.

Honestly, although I was glad to have done the spa once just to see it, I probably wouldn't do it a second time. It was kind of pricey just to swim, and I would have liked a more refreshing temperature. Again, we are not spa people, your mileage may vary.

Chose this "unique" hotel while visiting Matera. Yes it was everything the brochures said it would be but some of the basic things travelers expect to find in a hotel were missing. No in room safe. The doors of the rooms are open to the public. Couldn't leave anything of value in the room while out. Why no facial tissues? Air conditioners controlled by the front desk? The biggest negative was at the front desk. While waiting in line behind a couple checking, four individuals walked in and were served ahead of me. The women behind the counter knew I was there yet welcomed the foursome as if they were her personal friends.
