We arrived to Matera by car and were lucky to find a free car parking area just outside The Sassi on Via S. Cesarea, (you will be fined if you park in the wrong place), we walked to the Hotel which took about 7 minutes. The Hotel wil provide you a parking space and they charge about 20 euro's per day and will also help with your luggage by prior arrangements. The Hotel is right in The Sassi and the reception area used to be a 13th century church.
We booked a standard small room and we were aware that we had to climb up steep steps and enter the bedroom through a trap door, which you closed when sleeping.
Definately not suitable for children, elderly etc. Downstairs was a small entrance hall and the bathroom, which didn't have any shelves to put your toothpaste, shaving things on, and the bedroom was very small. Could be a little claustrophobic for some or something different for others, 2 nights was enough in this type of room.
Breakfast was included in the price, and was served in the old part of the Hotel (the church altar) but was basic, limited choices. The staff were very friendly and took the time to explain about 'The Sassi' and what to see and the Hotel is in an excellent position for this. Advice - take care on choosing the right room for you.

We stayed here for three nights. The first night our room (#105) was very challenging. the bed was in a small room just barely bigger than the bed, that was up a very narrow spiral staircase from the entrance room which was also very tiny and was also the location of the bathroom. We switched to room 106 for the next two nights and it worked just fine. But don't stay here without looking closely at the room descriptions on line. The location was good, the breakfast and the service were as good as they should be for a hotel in this price range.

Room Tip: Avoid room #105

If you are going to stay in Matera you have to stay in the Sassi to get the full experience. The staff are very nice, the selection at breakfast very good and the location superb.

The staff were helpful in recommending places to eat and the drivers from the garage to the hotel very helpful also

The rooms are individual ours had a door so we did not feel enclosed; and contrary to some reviews our room did not feel or small of damp. It was stylish and well appointed.

So stay here.

Really hard to put into words this hotel, see picture above, this was our room. Absolutely fabulous setting and attention to detail. Not often you get to shower in a cave! A great, luxurious base to explore the wonderful setting of Matera. Excellent staff and good breakfast. On arrival we had a member of staff drive with us to try and find on street parking. I would suggest not to bother just go to the secure parking the hotel uses and pay the 20 euros per day, quicker and easier and saved worrying about getting a parking ticket. Have already recommended this hotel and the area to my friends and work colleagues.

We have been staying at this gorgeous hotel for five nights now, We have room 1009 which opens onto a narrow cobbled street and looks out over the sassi. it is magical. The room is so comfortable with a roomy shower room , loo and bidet. shampoos, bath wash, hairdryer all included! mini bar too. The staff and Roberto (the owner)are sweet and cannot do enough to to help. Breakfasts are delicious.

And the nights are peaceful and quiet.

Room Tip: Room 1009 is gorgeous and not the most expensive. A little away from the main hotel reception.
