This place is a must try. It was cash only when we went but still amazing. We ordered the lemon pesto pasta, slow cooked octopus, and the catch of the day sea bass. The pasta was good, octopus was delightful, but the star of the meal was the incredible sea bass (not shown). Cooked with capers in a white wine sauce, what a delight. The waiter de-boned the fish at the table. I can't get over how good this fish was. Meal was a little pricey but well worth it!

We enjoyed Taverna degli Apostoli several times during our May 2018 stay in Amalfi. We had eaten there once last year, and were astonished when our hostess, Sara, remembered us when I approached to make a reservation this year. In a town jammed with tourists, how amazing that you are recognized a year after your initial visit!

This time around, over the course of three meals there, we enjoyed their marinated anchovies in a wonderful lemon sauce, the signature lemon pesto tagliolini, a meaty spaghetti Bolognese, pillowy-soft ricotta stuffed gnocchi, and a rich rigatoni Genovese, along with bottles of a red Lacrima Nero. The food was uniformly excellent, and the service and attentiveness of the staff is all you could ask for. The location, under the eaves of the staircase of the Duomo is absolutely charming. On one evening, the weather wasn't amenable to outdoor dining, so everyone was seated indoors...the indoor portion of the restaurant is akin to an art gallery.

While we love this restaurant, I would be remiss if I did not mention two minor things. First, it is cash only, which catches some people by surprise, but here is a Bancomat just steps away, if needed. The other is that there is no house wine, so a bottle of wine will run at least €24, or you can order by the glass.

We were absolutely bowled over by this thoroughly charming restaurant turning out extremely accomplished food.

The restaurant is located right next to Amalfi cathedral, a little tucked away by the side, with both indoor and outdoor seating.

Service was excellent, professional and warm throughout (it seems a family owned/run business) - attentive but not overbearing. We were predominantly served by Sara, but all of the team we dealt with were excellent.

Wine list was both considered and well-priced.

Onto the food:

We started with what is probably the best burrata I've had in my life ... and I've had a lot of it. Paired with a delicious prosciutto, it was exemplary.

Equally exceptional for starters was a 4-hour oil-poached octopus which had a texture I've never before enjoyed in octopus, an almost fatty and gelatinous quality along with the usual firmer (though still tender) flesh.

Mains were similarly excellent across the table, although I was most pleased with my own: ricotta-stuffed hand-made gnocchi in an intense tomato sauce. Italian cooking at its best - extremely simple, but gloriously executed. I could eat only that bowl of food for the rest of my life.

Desserts continued to impress with both a lemon chantilly-topped superbly light sponge, as well as a strawberry cake which boasted perfectly ripe and sweet fruit.

The entire experience was superb, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Taverna degli Apostoli. Prices were extremely reasonable given the quality and location.

One pointer for guests - they only accept cash (or at least, that was the case at the time of our visit), though there is an ATM literally 15 seconds away, so it's not a problem at all.

Our family of five, kids ages 19, 18 and 12, ate at Taverna Degli Apostoli not once, but twice - that’s how delicious the food is! We are from
Chicago and have our pick of excellent, well-known and highly rated restaurants there, so we are very familiar with and enjoy good food. By all standards the food at Taverna Degli Apostoli was excellent - fresh ingredients, hand made pasta, fantastic steak, lamb and fish. Our entire family agreed this was the best food of our trip (Florence and Venice prior to Amalfi) and even our one fussy eater found nothing to complain about.

The service was attentive by Italian standards - we have found that here they are not trying to turn tables or press more food and drink on you, so they hang back more than we are accustomed to in the US and move at a more leisurely pace. If you can’t accept that going in, you probably will be frustrated throughout Italy.

Our first night in Amalfi we ate at a place that got comparable reviews here, but that place was mediocre at best in terms of food and wine quality. We would say that Taverna Degli Apostoli is an underrated gem in Amalfi. If you enjoy fresh ingredients, well cooked, honest food that’s not overly fussy (this is not Alinea), you will not be disappointed.

Great Amalfi spot in the middle of the town square. Sit outside and watch the town from above. Great seafood dishes and great pasta too. Great friendly service
