Prebooked a visit to the colosseum online with tour guide and skip the line. When we approached the entry line, they guards there asked us to move to the ticket line. After we explained to them that we already booked the tickets, they still insisted on going to the ticket line. There was a huge queuehad to wait for 1 hour to go to the ticket office, at which the ticket guy told us that we shouldnt be here as we already had paid for the tickets. It was already 1.5 hours late and we missed the scheduled tour by 1 hour. Getting inside it was just 15 mins, and we totally missed our tour. There was no refund given to us, just offered us in exchange a video and audio guide , which was extremely useful. The dissapointing thing is that we lost 1.5 hours waiting in queues and also we missed the tour guide time slot, which we paid (wasnt cheap) . I blame the whole organizers/information people who were not informed enough and were misleading the tourists(we werent the only ones, at leadt two groups i met had the same issues)

Colosseum experience is awesome, but could have been better if all the mussunderstandings were avoided

Thank Prouso

Get on-line with the official Co-op Culture website and buy a guided tour in advance. Bring water...the visitor center sells out early. Get there early because despite buying a ticket in advance there is a long security line to get through. Lots of tour companies will try to sell you their services outside so be sure to ask actual site personnel if you have questions.

We booked a "skip the line" colosseum tour. Even though it was a cold, rainy day, it was definately worth the visit. The history and architectural significance is not overrated. However, even with the skip-the-line tour, we waited in line for over an hour! The crowds can be overwhelming especially once you enter the colosseum. In cold, rainy conditions, it was almost not worth it.

the colosseum is without a doubt a key monument in the roman history, but even disregarding that fact the sheer size and complexity of the building makes it worthy of your time. By going early in the morning, (right about the opening hour) and buying the tickets across the street from the entrance, (in a package deal with the palatino hill and foro romano) I was able to get in after waiting less than 10 minutes only. I went by myself without a guide, and I don't regret it because the building itself is so impressing that I probably wouldn't have been able to listen to the guide anyway. Although, I believe some sections of the colosseum (like the undergrounds) can only be visited with a guide. I really enjoyed my time there, and the presence of texts explaining part of its history made it educative even without a guide.

We were lucky enough to be staying in a hotel that was a 5 mins walk from the Colosseum.. because of this we never bothered to prebook tickets or pay for skip-the-line. We walked down to the ticket office at 8am, had a little wonder around and took some photos and then joined the ticket office queue around 8.20. There were probably 50 people in front of us at this time and by 8.30 (the Colosseum opening time) a further 70-80 people now queuing behind us so I would recommend getting there for 8am to avoid the long wait.

The queue for security check moved pretty quickly and we were inside in no time!

This was our second visit, the first being on a guided tour so we had a leisurely walk around this time.

The Colosseum is wonderful, the hoards of tourists can be annoying but you have to expect this. The girls in the ticket office were very friendly and provided any information needed. The staff inside at security were a little more stern but given their job and the hundreds of often rude tourists pushing their way through id be stern too!

The book shop inside is small but reasonably priced. I paid 5e for a Colosseum guide book, 10e for a Forum book and 12.90e for a book on the archaeological sites of Rome. The staff inside were friendly and worked down the queue at the tills fast.

The Colosseum is magnificent. Go and enjoy. Pre book if you cant get there early but if you are able to then arrive for 8am and this should help you avoid the long wait for tickets.
