The museums of the vatican are so vasts and numerous, it is impossible not to find something to like in them unless you don't like museum at all. At the same time, if you have an interested in everything they showcase and try to look at everything in one go you'll probably get out with a headache (like I did). I think the best way to enjoy these is to select what part you are the most interested in or visit them over a few days if you get the chance.

So beautiful! Highly recommend doing a sightseeing bus tour and buy your tickets for tourist attractions on the bus, this way you skip the queues!

We booked in advanced and arrived at 11, got in fairly easy, not much of a wait. The galleries are amazing, so many beautiful treasures. Not really good for little ones, it’s a very long way round, lots of steps, no where to run and play inside the museum. We found the downstairs outer galleries less crowded, but the ones inside the main body were horrendously crowded. It made it impossible for us as a large family to stay together, and we were literally pressed up against other people the whole way round which took the joy out of everything. Very claustrophobic and hot.

We purchased tickets online on the Vatican website for an English tour with guide. The tour was boring, took ages and we kept losing her because of the sheer amount of people in the place. You are shoulder to shoulder with people the whole way around and people bashing into you constantly. No small benches or seats anywhere so while waiting for the tour guide you just had to stand getting bashed into! Not good if you’ve got a bad back or feet etc. Also, had to constantly hold on to my sons hand for the whole 3 hours because I would have lost him otherwise. The beauty is breathtaking and the paintings are amazing. But the sheer volume of people took the shine away for us massively. The basilica however was a different story. It obviously isn’t as narrow so the amount of people didn’t matter as much and wow-that place is breathtaking. If I ever went again, I’d get on the before or after hours tours so it’s quieter or just walk around ourselves at our own pace. Definitely do buy tickets to get in online though, as you can queue for hours just to buy tickets. This way, you skip the queue and just have to pass through security. We had a colosseum tour with LivItaly (Giulia) and found out she also does Vatican tours so would definitely recommend her for a tour. She’s fab.

First - make your reservation at the Vatican web site, because if you don't you have a very long wait. Also, you can't do the museums in one day. Hight recommend and will return.
