Following Rick Steins weekend away programme one the places highlighted was this place, we were not disappointed, service and ambiance was good, a typical Italian restaurant, suggest a booking is made as Monday night was quite busy. The food was lovely and was a treat.

Scacco Matto was just a few steps away from where we were staying in Bologna so we happened upon it pretty much by accident.

It was so good we went there twice.

The exterior is quite ordinary and it looks like it might be a local, almost casual place that the local people would grab a bite in. But the food is probably Michelin standard - I didn't check to see if it has any awards, but I would be surprised if it didn't.

We weren't sure what we were ordering but it's one of those places where you could pretty much order anything on the menu and it would be stunning. The squid starter was amazing, as was a prawn, cauliflower and vanilla (I know, but it was amazing!!) special that wasn't on the menu.

The service was very friendly and helpful and not a bit stuffy. As you might expect it was jammed on both nights but they fitted us in without a reservation.

Highly recommend if you're in Bologna!!

We started with a bottle of Vallania's 2013 Terre Rosse Vio Val and our starters were potato ravioli with Parmesan cream, cappelletti with peas, asparagus and bacon, and chitarrina with tomato and anchovies. Then came tortino di squacquerone with artichokes, and crunchy egg(!) on creamed potato. Puddings were cagliatinadi limone, pudding flan and chocolate mousse with coffee sorbet. That totalled Euros 143 for three. Fantastic cooking, ingredients, presentation and service - a must-visit place!

To be honest when I knew I was going to visit Bologna I just has to go to this place because Mr Stein had been there on a recent tv show. You have to seek it out as it is down a rather ordinary alley . Food wonderful. I had squid and then lamb but the guy next to us had the tasting menu which look wonderful too. Attentive service and not a word of English spoken! Hurrah - love love it.
