Rule #1: Don't give up trying to find this place. Once you get here, you will enjoy the family-type atmosphere. The fish risotto for two was very enjoyable and fresh. The combination of apple and prosciutto was truly splendid. The wine list is short, but acceptable. We shared 2 half bottles, an Arneis and Greco, which paired nicely with our meals. This place is not spectacular, but solid.

Very convenient to the Hotel Du Lac. For our first course we had risotto with gorgonzola & mushrooms and for our main course we had sirloin steak stuffed with cheese & bresaola and for desert a chocolate tart in warm pear sauce all accompanied by the house red wine. Everything was delicious and well-prepared.

For our last day at Lake Como, we went to Varenna. We really had no idea where to go, but we wanted our last meal at the lake to be special. We just happened to be walking by this somewhat out-of-the-way restaurant and decided that the menu looked good. It was kind of late in their season (end of September) and we started out as the only people in the place, although a few more joined us. The food was delicious and we finally tasted the risotto with perch which is supposed to be a specialty of the Como area. We got a little carried away with courses and wine, so our lunch was quite expensive, but that was more because each of the 4 of us ordered 2 or 3 courses and we split 2 bottles of wine. You could keep the costs down by ordering less and still have enough to eat. (We were stuffed!) Cost aside, none of us regretted ordering as much food as we did because it was all delicious.

Firstly, the food was excellent, which is the most important thing when it comes to a restaurant, but it's not the only thing that makes a good experience. The service we had was not very good. Firstly we had booked a table for 12 people, but they had us at 2 different tables, so we had to manually move the tables together ourselves. Secondly, I think the waitress may have been worried about her English because she hardly came near us all evening and appeared a bit overawed. Most of us sat there for the majority of the meal without a drink because they never took drinks orders, or when they did there was no refilling or replacing of drinks. The Trout dyed with black ink was delicious, and I would return for that alone, but in a smaller group.

We had a very enjoyable evening here. The evening was warm and lovely and we sat outside. Lovely food and attentive service. We shared the vegetable tempura with dipping sauce and sesame seeds and the ravioli with pear and brie. They were both delicious. The ravioli were rich so I would recommend sharing. We the had two fish dishes. One was very interesting and the other just plain yummy. The lake trout fried in black cuttlefish ink and served with a parsley sauce was startling to see but interesting tastes. The sea bass served with mushroom and shrimp was excellent. The sauce was "to die for". We had a lovely semi-local wine that was tasty and well-priced. I would recommend this restaurant to visitors in Varenna.
