Arriving by water taxi, we were impressed with the great location on the lower Grand Canal, right at the opening to the Lagoon. We were given a suite with a view of the Canal. Rooms were elegant, clean, and the staff was attentive. We ate at both Canal-side restaurants where the food was delicious.

Room Tip: Upper floors facing the Grand Canal

Having never stayed at a hotel where one can arrive by boat on the Grand Canal, this experience was unique. The hotel staff was cordial and accommodating. The room was a bit "close" but nice and very clean. The breakfast buffet was above average. The bar at the dock entrance provided excellent service though it was a bit pricey. In sum, it was a very good and interesting stay.

Pros

1. Centrally located - literally five minute walk from the Piazza San Marco. Once you walk out the back of the hotel the canals for the gondolas are literally around the corner. The hotel is also right next to the major designer shops (e.g. Gucci, Ferragamo, etc)

2. Huge space - the room was big, even for US standards for us

3. Great breakfast - very large selection of breakfast foods, good coffee and juices, etc

Cons

1. Shower - not sure if this was just our experience but the shower was tiny compared to the room and bathroom. There was a flap that could open and close but even when closed it would leak water out onto the bathroom floor. Again, not sure if that's commonplace for Italian hotels but this was the one thing that through us off.

2. Check in time - this is not a unique issue for this hotel as it was for pretty much all hotels across Europe for us. There really is not much leeway for early check in here (or again for most other hotels). If they say 3 pm check in, be prepared to leave your stuff with the concierge and spend your time exploring the city or the hotel amenities.

Overall the hotel looks impressive, strategically situated, beautiful marble detail, good breakfast right on the grand canal. However, the room was definitely moldy, even with the a/c on, as we had hot weather. There was one light switch in the entire suite that controlled all the lights, not separate light switches for each room, or even by the bed stands.
Upon being dropped off at the water entrance when initially checking in, my wife almost tripped on the step up to the entrance. On the day we left, waiting for the water taxi, another women was entering, actually tripped on the in marked step up and hit her chin and face on the marble floor. A very bloody accident. The entrance really should have a ramp up instead of the step. When the accident happened the head porter started yelling at the other porters as if the entrance design was thief fault.

Finally, as a 20+ year Marriott rewards member, staying at the recently merged Starwood branded hotel, I was extremely disappointed that no one was trained in the Marriott rewards gold elite program which includes the the breakfast. Management has not trained their employees in the merged rewards programs, and I was taken back by the rudeness of the blond women at the front desk upon checking out. She verbalized being upset with the Starwood buyout by Marriott. I ultimately had to see the front desk manager about reversing my breakfast charge.

The Europa suites are beautiful and comfortable with plenty of room, decent size bathrooms , but the shower facilities could do with an upgrade, definitely not older people or disabled friendly. Breakfast is served out on the terrace with awesome water views, what a great way to start the day. The bar area is beautifully decorated with the bar staff being very helpful and friendly.
Great place to stay in.
