“Hidden gem in Cortona”
Review of Sartu

Sartu
Ranked #1 of 100 Restaurants in Cortona
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: RM 154 - RM 231
Description: SarTù • Cortona is the smallest restaurant in this fantastic village. Only 18 seats, the perfect size to pamper your guests. SarTù lives in very ancient walls, A. D. 1300 but does not disdain pop art as interiors designer. Its cuisine is entrusted to the typical products of the Italian territory and its tradition, peculiarities that have made Italy recognizable all over the world. Small is beautiful, intimate, welcoming, warm. Savoring the calm, good wine and good food are none other than the pleasures of good living.

There are so many restaurants in Cortona that I often hesitate to try a new restaurant over one I frequent. My wife and I spend our winters here in Cortona, and tonight we decided to try Sartu, a restaurant that has opened in the past year. It’s located down one of the many alleyways branching off the Via Nazionale. Am I happy I gave it a try!!! It was one of the best meals I’ve eaten in Italy. The staff was extremely friendly and appreciative that we stopped for dinner. The food was outstanding, and the prices were very reasonable. We each started with pasta dishes. I also ordered pork filets with apples, potatoes, and a lovely dessert which they call a Stagege (spelling), some crunchy pasta swimming in honey, served with a glass of brandy for less than I would spend for the brandy alone back in the USA. Lilliana, the chef, came out of the kitchen and greeted us. What a meal! What an experience! We will return. I highly recommend.

Lilliana has a limited but impressive menu. Both secondi we selected were excellent. My wife had the fillet with pink peppercorns and loved it. The sauce excellent. I had the pork with apples and loved that as well. We drank glasses of the local wine Achelo which was great.

We arrived at our villa late on a Saturday and tried to walk into some highly recommended restaurants ;however the were all completely booked . Therefore we went exploring and noticed a stair case with candles leading down to Sartu . We walked into a small and very quaint setting and was greeted by the owner and chef .Fortunately we arrived early (8:00pm) , and were able to be seated prior to the late crowd arrival . The chef /owner takes all orders and helps you make the perfect selections . The salad , homemade pasta with shrimp and the steak with mushrooms were delicious and very fresh . The prices are very reasonable. Unfortunately it was our first night in Cortona and we will need to wait to compare other restaurants doing our nine day stay in the Tuscan region . We may find other comparable restaurants; however we plan on visiting Sartu again ,during our stay .

We found this sweet little restaurant as we wandered through the streets of Cortona hungry, way too early for most Italian restaurants to be open. The owner was out lighting the candles leading down the steps to her place. Of course we were the only ones there but she was so accommodating! So far never had any wait staff be as attentive as she was and adorable with her English, laughing about everything. We've found so many other places in Italy quite dour...
We both enjoyed the homemade ravioli dish along with a pea soup (both unlike anything we've had before!). By the time we left it was filling with others who had been lucky enough to stumble upon this adorable place. Love it!
