Owner description: Florence's principal palace was begun in 1299 and built as the seat of the Signoria, the fathers of the city's republican government.

Of all the wonderful things to see in Florence, I put the Palazzo Vecchio at the top of the list. The ceilings are incredibly beautiful and the frescoes will take your breath away. I didn't make it up to the roof because it is closed when it rains. Highly recommend a visit.

There are so many attractions to see and visit in Florence that you might be tempted to not visit Palazzo Vecchio. On our first trip several years ago, we did not see it, but after touring it on our latest visit I’ve decided that Palazzo Vecchio should be on your “must see” list if you go to Florence. It is one of the most important and famous buildings in Florence and while the building still functions as Florence's city hall, most of the Palazzo Vecchio is a museum. If you have the time, I suggest the audio guide, especially if you are like me and not familiar with Italian history or art. The audio guides generally give detailed information on the exhibits but it takes more time. We usually rent them, but this time we didn’t and mid-visit I regretted our decision. If you are physically able and haven’t already seen an aerial/elevated view of Florence from Boboli Gardens or the Duomo, I would also suggest climbing the tower. If you have seen the movie “Inferno” or read Dan Brown’s 2013 international bestseller of the same name, you know that Palazzo Vecchio plays an important part in the plot. It has also apparently appeared in several other films.

The ceilings alone are worth the entrance fee. It’s room after room of stunning artwork, the map room being particularly interesting to cartographers. The main hall is a great space with lavish decoration, the upper rooms are really wort( spending some time in. Didn’t go up the tower as it had closed which was a shame.

We purchased tickets online in advance and were very happy to see all the great rooms in Palazzo Vecchio. Unfortunettly big part of palace was closed due to some private occassion.... of course no refund or partial refund was possible. So we saw just part of palace and all the best rooms were closed. What a shame....
