Buy the ticket in advance to climb the dome. You can see the inside of the church briefly too, and decide if you really want to stand in the long line to see it again. If you buy the advance ticket you can go into the baptistry (which had no line) which was very beautiful.

If you want to go up the Duomo get there early to avoid the crowd, then you will have time to admire the cathedral.
We spent a lot of time wandering around Florence using Duomo as point of reference. The crowds to enter were daunting so we did not do it. You may need to be there at opening. Will try again
This place is a must visit while in Florence. Not only it is beautiful from outside but the overall ambiance is photogenic.
The tour is magnificent and the Duomo is worth the effort. It is one of the most breathtaking Cathedrals on the planet and if you are willing make the effort of hiking the steps to the top of the Duomo, the views are their own work of art.
HOWEVER, do not forget to get a reservation for the walk up to the top of the Duomo. You need a reservation. With one, no worries: without, you will have to come back.
