We have been here twice now- the first time 5 years ago when we followed the waiter's recommendations and enjoyed a meal rich in local meat and wine.
This time we came back and received a warm welcome. We sat on one of the few tables outside which are somewhat on a slant much like many places in San Gim but nevertheless this is not a high end restaurant and we enjoyed the humour of our angle!
We had a delicious meal and once again enjoyed the wild boar stew mopped up with some chunks of bread and washed down with a nice Chianti.
The position of the restaurant in our opinion is great as it is off the main stretch and the lighting is really rather lovely for relaxed chat.

If you are expecting your food to be Insta-worthy then this is not the place for you as it is hearty home cooking but if you enjoy rich flavours then go here!

Dear Guests,

thanks for your nice review!

You perfectly resumed the philosophy behind the management of our little restaurant: food is to be enjoyed, not photographed.

We really appreciate when our guests talk to each other, or listen to the owners’ suggestions, and really enjoy their meal, because this is the way food is conceived in Tuscany and in Italy in general: a way to meet together with the people you love, and have a great time with them sharing good food, ideas and stories.
You are always very welcome, we really appreciated your visits!

Best Wishes,

Gino and Virgilio

The staff was friendly but the food was bad. The Brushetta was composed of tasteless bread with some olive oil and tomatoe slices that covered the pieces or bread. Worse, only two of the four pieces of bread had tomatoes slices on them. 0 efforts and taste.

The pasta was OK at best but again very little effort. The tomatoes in mine were cut into quarters. Not all the herbs stated in the menu were on my plate. Very simple dishes that took over 45 minutes to serve.

Finally when we got our bill there was a 2.50 X2 charge for having the table set (utensils and napkin). When I asked the server about this ridiculous charge he showed me the menu where it was clearly stated. I joked, "do I get to at least keep it?" He was not amused.

Dear Guests,

thanks for taking the time to write your feedback, we were actually expecting your review.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the long waiting. Just for you to be informed, someone from the staff was missing for personal, unexpected reasons, we were therefore facing a hard time that day and still trying to do our best. What we had to do – and maybe missed to – is making this clear at your arrival. We apologize for having being so late and we are really sorry if that affected your whole meal.

We never discuss tastes, and we accept critics, because these help us get better and better, and because food is such a personal thing, that we cannot always meet everyone’s expectations. But in this case, we are really convinced your long waiting badly affected your impression on the whole meal.

Tuscan bread is typically made without salt, this belongs to the local tradition, as people usually have bread together with very tasty foods, and this is why bread is unsalted. The reason why you had tomatoes on 2 slices out of 4 is that Bruschetta is traditionally made with roast bread, oil, salt and garlic ONLY. Tomato comes on a later version. This dates back to the past, when families were very poor and could barely afford a piece of bread. What we propose is a “mixed bruschetta” with both versions. No worries, then, the chef was late, but didn’t forget anything on your dish.

Maybe you haven’t eaten in many places in Italy, as the “coperto” is a charge existing everywhere, maybe not so high as in San Gimignano, but we can grant the charge at Le Catene is on average.

Wishing you a good time in Italy, we remain

Sincerely,

Gino and Virgilio

We took a bit of a gamble on this place and enjoyed a good meal with attentive service - right up until the end of the main course, following which we were completely ignored. Other tables were served desserts and coffees but we weren't afforded that opportunity. So we paid the bill and left. Their loss, not ours.

Dear Guests,

thanks for your nice review on food and service.

We are very sorry to hear we were not attentive until the very end, August is a demanding, busy period, but of course this is no excuse and you are right to complain on that. Only, we would have preferred to hear that directly from you, and not having to read it on an online review.

Sincerely,

Gino and Virgilio

We found Catene after our first choice turned us away for being full.

The outside tables were full but the street is on a slope so it was little hardship to go inside.

The boar ragu with pappardelle was a nice meaty start. It is rather a large portion as well.

I then went for chicken with saffron. This again was well cooked, was very tasty and very satisfying.

My wife had the stracatto which was a stew cup casserole made with chianina beef. It was very tasty and we'll received despite a "splash" down her front, whoops.

The local red wine was very commendable but this is one town where the standard is extremely high.

The place is nice enough and service is very good.

They run a nice place here that is well worth visiting when in SG. Enjoy!
