This hotel is overrated, 3 star is more appropriate.
Personnel is very nice and helpful.
Location is a good starting point to visit Gubbio (1,2 km form center)
Parking around the hotel is ok.
No restaurant a la carte one menu for dinner for all the present.
need to be renovated asap.

Agree with most of the other reviews, hotel a little dated but very clean and staff could not be more helpful. A great place to stay to explore the area. Booked through Fleetway Travel and thought it was great value for money. Would recommend hiring a car to make the most of your stay, Sienna and Assisi are a must to visit. Gubbio was great, fantastic places to eat and drink at very reasonable prices, amazing views, lovely walks. We had a brilliant week!

Just back from a one week stay and felt compelled to write a review. As has been mentioned by other reviewers the hotel itself is pretty dated and careworn but that is more than made up for by the friendly and incredibly professional attitude of the staff. We had a minor issue with our first breakfast on our trip and the mangeress dealt with it really well, offering us apologies and flowers - she genuinely cared. In the hospitality industry you really see the true worth of an establishment in how they deal with complaints and Sporting Hotel did fanstastically well. As for Gubbio and Umbria itself...our first visit and WOW, we'll be back. Thanks to all the staff for making us welcome.

My friend and I stayed here on a budget break and were apprehensive about what to expect.
We had an amazing time.Gubbio is spectacular and so is the Sporting Hotel.
As a seasoned traveller,I have never experienced such wonderful hospitality and the staff , Artemis, Fabriana,-the whole team -ensured we had the best possible holiday possible.
The food was beyond our expectations, excellent variety,we had a ball at the cooking class!!(See video) and cannot wait to return.

My boyfriend and I booked a stay here fairly last minute through Broadway travel after seeing a Travelzoo offer which looked easy and good value. It included 5 nights half board stay with car hire, cookery class and wine tasting included. Other than the 3 hour drive from Rome Ciampiono airport being pretty tiring (I think some flights to Perugia very available but not for our dates) it did live up to our expectations!

The hotel itself I think was last decorated in the 1970's/80's and could really use a bit of modernising, particularly the dining room. However, it was scrupulously clean with good wifi and an easy walk to the centre of the beautiful town of Gubbio, past the amazing Roman amphitheatre. Food wise, we had never planned to eat at the hotel every night as we love trying new places but the two nights we did eat in, the food was good quality and home cooked. However, the wine (whilst very cheap) wasn't great and as previously said we didn't find the dining room a very inviting place although the serving staff were lovely and attentive. Whilst there were some nice home made cakes on offer, the breakfast selection was pretty limited.

What was really great about this place though, was the absolutely wonderful and friendly service that was above and beyond anything we've experienced anywhere else, particularly from Artemis and Caterina on the front desk! We had a kind greeting from the start, they gave us directions and recommendations for everything we wanted to do in Gubbio. When we said we wanted to visit Assisi, they printed off and translated directions for us as our sat nav didn't have the new roads in, and also arranged the wine tasting for us and gave us a list of suggestions for visiting the beautiful Lake Trasimeno. Artemis also kindly lent me an umbrella as it rained for most our trip and celebrated with us on the one day of sunshine! Someone also recognised our strange English predilection for tea at all times of the day and kindly left us a tea tray in our room after a long wet day exploring Spoleto and Assisi. The manager also made a point of introducing herself to us and checking we were enjoying everything. We would advise though, letting them know if you don't plan to eat there every night as I think she panicked a little that it was because we didn't like the hotel, rather than we just like trying new places!

Regarding the add on's, the cookery class was fun, the chef and the waitress who translated were very nice and we enjoyed making the gnocchi although as keen cooks ourselves we wouldn't have minded a little more detail. We highly recommend going to the wine tasting, it is about an hours drive away but in a beautiful area, a really interesting tour and delicious wine!

All in all, the lovely, warm, friendly and helpful staff here overcame the shortcomings of the hotel itself and we had a wonderful trip!
