Great staff, nice room with view over the river. The overnight person on reception was super helpful but did not have the rights to check us out and the day shift was running late. Not his fault but as we were running to catch a flight he wanted to take copies of our credit cards so we could be checked out when the day shift arrived. Not very happy about that! We were checking out at 7am...perhaps having the right staff on from earlier, or training everyone to use the systems would be helpful. Otherwise a nice stay!

The East-West Hotel is situated very nicely with one side to the Rhein quite central in lovely Basel. There is a enjoyable terrace at the riverside. The styling of the hotel is modern with a vintage twist e.g. squeaky wooden floors. The glass walls of the bathrooms leave not that much privacy and that is a choice so to say. The IKEA hanging closet is by the way pulling down the quality of the rest of the style choices.
The people were kind and all and all it is quite informal.
The rooms at the riverside are about 30% more expensive yet probably advisable. This is because the main drawback of this hotel is the noise coming from and echoing on the street.
Okay: this is a centrally located hotel, so we could have known this but still, it was a very noisy night and the sounds of the people on the street and the early deliveries nestled in our restless dreams.
So despite the sympathetic touch, next time in Basel I'd go somewhere else to catch some sleep.

Wonderful hotel, beautiful location and excellent service. The bedroom was very comfortable and the staff went out of their way to be helpful. It is in the centre of Basel, on the banks of the river, close to great bars and restaurants. I will definitely stay here again!

The East-West hotel is a small but pretty hotel. Its timber floors in honey hues make the place immediately welcoming. There is no doubt that money went into doing up the place which is perched on the banks of the Rhine and enjoys glorious views of the town and its lovely stone bridges.

The breakfast is smaller in scope and range than the larger hotels but the friendly and welcoming staff rustled up a lovely cappuccino and we had croissants and juices. Cheeses and eggs were on offer too.

So, where does it go wrong. We only stayed one night and can only comment upon our own room which was 209. The room had the fantastic river view and new mattresses but no wardrobe. There was a cloth pigeon hole and hooks but that would not work for a longer stay. Also, the bathroom lights were close to the main door rather than just outside it, or even inside at least. So try waking up at night and doing the deed in considerate silence......

The worst thing of all though was a problem with their engineering or maintenance. I drew this to the attention of the management and they immediately knew about the problem: this led me to ask, myself, why hasn't the room been taken off the market until the problem is solved. The heating system has a flaw and you can hear water dripping just behind your bed when you are in bed. In the dead of night, the constant beat felt like the neighbours were tapping at the wall behind you with a small hammer. It was disconcerting, to say the least and deprived this weary traveller from a restful night.

A small hotel with a charm of an old Swiss house in an excellent location overlooking the Rhine, within walking distance from almost all sights! Staff was very helpful, the room was warm and clean. You also get a free transit card when you check in. Breakfast was adequate.

We had a room overlooking the street where bars and pubs are really noisy until very very late! I think they should do something about the noise or at least warn their customers!

I would go back if it is for a night or two!
