Truly grand. We are in the least expensive room and it still is very grand. Heavy doors, gorgeous wood furniture, beautiful bathroom (2 sinks, large bathtub, lovely amenities), and friendly staff at check-in. We were offered a welcome drink and we accepted 2 flutes of sparkling wine and like another reviewer, found a immediate charge on our bill, which they removed after we brought it up - does seem a bit weird. Close enough to the train station to walk, although we took a cab as it was raining - 14 CHF.

Location: The Grand Hotel National is located right on the lake, the lobby, restaurant, bar and many rooms have direct views of the lake and mountaints - stunning. Lots of shopping restaurants steps from the hotel. 5 minute taxi ride to the train station. This hotel is all about LOCATION + Views.

Ambience: Old world charm, slightly updated. The hotel stretches about a block long next to the lake and there are tons of floor to ceiling windows allowing the view to stream into the hotel. The ceilings of the main floor are quite high and the common rooms are quite large - a very room feel. Some really nice artwork - Gerhard Richter prints; Calder works on paper from the 1970s, Dali lithos and other assorted prints in the rooms.

Rooms: Great views - get a room faxcing the lake with a balcony!!! Fairly small in size - think it was a queen size bed; high ceilings help to make the room seem larger. Writing desk, long chandalier hanging from ceiling, armoire for your clothes, small LCD TV and room safe and binoculars for the view. Nice artwork. The bathroom had good water pressure in the shower/tub combon, but, again small in size. Note: this is an old building and the walls are PAPER THIN. I could hear the couple next door watching TV and the people upstairs on my ceiling until 11 PM. So - may not be a good choice if you really need sleep.

Restaurant + Bar: Again, great views of the lake and mountains. We were invited for the complimentary drink after check in and had one - we had to take the charge off the bill upon check out - they didn't let the bar tender know. Drinks were good and bartender was friendly. We had breakfast in the large dining room next to the bar - nice morning buffet - great Calder artwork on the walls. There are 4 restaurants on the property - all facing the lake.

We tried the Thai restaurant for dinner - I would say good quality for Switzerland - not cheap, but once again a great view. The manager was doing business work at a table a few paces away which was kind of strange - he probably enjoyed the view as well. Prices are Swiss High as expected.

Service: The staff seemed young and inexperienced. Check-in / Check-out took too long; there was no one at the entrance to help with luggage or taxis - this is left to the front desk staff. At these prices service should be 5 star - it is not.

Spa & Pool: There is a spa and pool on the property - I did not visit them.

Room Tip: Facing lake with balcony on higher floors!

This is a fantastic hotel and is worth paying for a room with a view over the lake, a bit expensive but its worth it the service and rooms are fantastic. Breakfast is very nice with a wide selection of food.

My husband and I stayed at the hotel for 3 nights over the easter bank holiday weekend. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was a good size esp for a city hotel.
The swimming pool was an adequate size but there was no fitness facilities except for one bike. You can use the fitness parc next door but its 25 swiss francs (discounted rate as its 35 swiss francs normally)
We tried to go to the Thai restaurant in the hotel but they were fully booked. It was a bit strange as they had loads of empty tables... The restaurants are attached to the hotel but are not all owned by the hotel.
The little personal touches like a fruit bowl on arrival in the room, mini chocolates wishing us a good night every night was lovely.
The reception staff always greeted us when we walked past.
George was very helpful as he explained to us the facilities in the hotel and booked us in the Thai Garden restaurant which was a 10mins walk from the hotel. The restaurant was gorgeous however a bit over priced.
Food tends to be very expensive in Lucerne...

My husband and I arrived at the Grand Hotel National early Friday morning, after traveling through the night from America, and then taking an hour train ride from Zurich. We were exhausted, crabby and tired of traveling. Within the first 10 minutes of arriving at the delightful Grand Hotel National we were already perked up. Since it was only 10:00 a.m. local time our room was not quite ready. We were offered a welcome drink in the lounge while the housekeeping staff prepared our room. Before we knew it, the room was cleaned and we were allowed to check in. Getting early access to the room was key for us, since we were so tired and really wanted a nap. GHN was so gracious about this and clearly understood how much we'd appreciate this early access.
Our room was HUGE and beautifully appointed, with a lovely view of the lake. Later that night we discovered that our room was located directly over the restaurant/bar, which evidently on some Friday nights turns into more of a nightclub with the requisite thumping bass music. It took but a brief call to the front desk where we just inquired how long the music would go on, since we were ready to go to sleep. We were promptly offered a free upgrade to a suite on a higher floor away from the music. The upgraded room was absolutely beautiful - with a crystal chandelier, fireplace, and beautiful balcony. We of course took the desk clerk up on his offer and accepted their assistance in helping move us - the relocation was painless and we were settled into our new digs in no time.
This same desk clerk (Christophe, I believe?) who gave us the upgrade impressed us with his incredible client service throughout our stay. The next night we asked the desk clerk on duty (who also functions as a concierge) if they could assist us with a reservation at a particular restaurant. We were unable to secure a reservation on only a couple of hours notice (not entirely unexpected), so my husband and I planned to just set out on our own and see what we could find.
However, that was not to be - perhaps 30 minutes later we received a call from the other desk clerk (again, Christophe, I believe) stating that his colleague mentioned we were not able to get a reservation at our first choice, so he wanted to make sure we had a back-up plan and offered his assistance to help.
Overall, we received simply first-rate service in a friendly, gracious, and genuine manner. Also a pleasant surprise was that unlike in the U.S. no one ever had their hand out expecting a tip for helping us - we really got the sense that the staff simply doing what they should do anyway.
Truly a 5-Star experience and if we find ourselves in Lucerne again, we won't look beyond the Grand Hotel National.
