We stayed 3 night while in Interlaken, although technically it’s in the neighbouring village of Matten.

We found it ok on foot, probably about a 20 minute walk from Interlaken West Station, but we only had small backpacks.

The building dates from 1666 and it’s beautiful. Old wooden, chalet style, definitely stands out against the neighbouring buildings.

We arrived around midday, didn’t find anyone at reception and after waiting 10 minutes had to go down to the restaurant to find someone. The lady was abrupt and not very welcoming. She didn’t appear to check whether our room was ready or not and just told us to come back at 2pm as that’s check in time. She seemed to find the fact she had guests there at all an inconvenience.

Anyway we went to the pub (the Three Tells) for lunch and came back at 2 (she still wasn’t there), finally got our room key, but little else.

We had a room with private bathroom on the top floor, which was large and had a lovely balcony which would afford great views of the mountains in a clear day. The room was a bit dated but it fits in with the style of the place.

Clean and comfortable, apart from the odd shaped pillows, which even folded in half was not substantial enough and I needed to bolster with the pleather sofa cushions. No complementary tea/ coffee in the room, no toiletries. Very basic but that’s ok.

We didn’t try the food here. There are some nice places nearby. Barracuda bar/ cafe over the road for bagels and coffee, a traditional bakery further along and if your lucky enough to be there on the weekend I highly recommend eating at Balmers. The fondue was yummy and good value compared to everything else in Switzerland.

There’s an outdoor adventure place practically next door where you can hire skies/ other equipment and clothing and also organise trips. We did the snowshoeing and sledding and was great fun.

Herschel is about a 20 minute walk into Interlaken depending on which route you take. Of an evening they leave gluhwein and hot spiced juice in reception which is great after a cold day.

I wanted to say only good things about this place, because the location, vistas and look of the place is perfect but... for a guesthouse they just don’t seem to want the guests there and all seems a bit of an inconvenience. Still it didn’t bother us too much and still had a fab stay here.

We stayed here just one night, and wow we loved it! We stayed on the top floor where the rooms are perhaps a little larger and more modern. Bathroom was great. But the real highlight is the exterior - when we pulled into this Hotel our eyes lit up! It's the prettiest Swiss chalet style Hotel in Interlaken!

It was a short walk into town, free off street parking. Highly recommend you stay here!!

The location of this Swiss Chalet--looking hotel, on Hauptstrasse, is a few blocks off the main street, Höheweg that cut through the heart of Interlaken, but it is still very convenient. Hauptstrasse runs through the adjoining village of Matten, and there are several pubs and restaurants on that street. the balcony off the dining room as well as one of the rooms on the first level upstairs looks out over the hotel restaurant's outdoor seating, but also offers an excellent view of the Jungfrau mountain on clear days. The staff is very friendly, and the rooms are spacious. The décor is typical Swiss, which may seem slightly cabin-like to those used to American hotels, but the beds were comfortable, the area quiet, and the ambience fitting for a Swiss Chalet experience. The breakfast is included and similar or better to what you would receive at a Holiday Inn Express, or Homewood Suites or similar American hotel, but is a nicer dining room. The noon meal special we ate at the hotel's restaurant was excellent, but if you want to try other places as well, I strongly recommend the Xport Pizza restaurant about a block down Hauptsrasse, next to Balmer's Herberge. Although it is a couple of hundred yards from the hotel, across a park to the shops along Höheweg, that walk offers the added advantage of being able to watch parasailers glide in for landings in the large field of the Höhematte park. The hotel itself is much older than it looks. The present building dates back to the 1600s, but careful renovations have updated it for comfort and safety, while preserving its historic charm.

Room Tip: If available, there is one room on the floor above the lobby level, which gas a nice balcony, with a view of the Jungfrau peak.

One has the impression that this traditional hotel has to reinvent itself every decade or two. In this way, the hotel is on the up. There has been recent investment in en suite rooms. There is a general sense of a desire to serve.

It has all the charm of a historic house, low ceilings, several floors and totally different from a modern hotel. It has charm and is folklorique.

The food is good enough, sometimes excellent which is consistent with it being reasonable value. Many traditional dishes.

Location of the hotel is a little further away from the train station. However, it is still walkable. Perhaps about 20 minutes walk. You get quite a beautiful view of the mountain from this hotel. We stayed in a room with shared bathroom. The bathroom is clean and well taken care of. Room is a little small but it as okay for us since we spend most our time outside anyways. A very nice authentic swiss style hotel/chalet :)
