Cheese Fondue to die for! They made space for us on NYE even though they were fully booked.

The restaurant is small, but we were seated right away. We ordered the fondue with potatoes and bread. A local specialty that we had to try while in Zurich.

Our evening was spoiled by 3 elements;
1.The guy who served us, had a short sleeved T-shirt revealing many swastika tatoos on both arms.
2.I ordered raclette and the service between every portion of cheese was extremely slow. Although the menu proposes a formula " a discretion", I took only 3 portion because I was already fed up of waiting.Proposing this formula one should be organized to serve his clients accordingly, especially as the prices are not cheap!
3.regarding the authenticity and the charm, be ready to be disapointed as you will not see the raclette machine unless you are ready to spend the evening in the kitchen!!
otherwise you receive melted cheese straight on your plate....

This is a very traditional Swiss restaurant - small, cosy, complete with wooden furniture and checkered tablecloths! If you love cheese and want cheese for dinner, this is the restaurant for you. There are only two types of meal on the menu here: fondue, and raclette. These are both traditional meals from the French part of Switzerland, basically melted cheese, eaten with bread/potatoes/onions/gerkhins. You choose from variations of these two meals (there is a fondue option with meat if the idea of an all-cheese dinner scares you). Those looking for more variety should go elsewhere, but if you haven't tried it before, it's a fantastic experience and this is the restaurant to try it.

If you've never had either meal before, don't be shy, there were as many tourists here as there were locals and the proprietor will explain how to eat your meal if you have no idea (it's fairly obvious and simple though). The proprietor also is the restaurant's only waitress, but the service is excellent as it's a small restaurant. The restaurant was quite busy, but for 2 people you don't need a reservation.

By the way - this restaurant positively stinks of cheese. As soon as you walk in, the strong bitey smell hits you. Not for the faint-hearted. We had the moitié-moitié fondue which was fantastic. The portions are generous although a little bit overpriced (about CHF 34 per person for the fondue).

For those interested in raclette - they have "all you can eat" raclette for about CHF 40 here. Unfortunately they don't bring the raclette machine out onto the table for you to scrape your own cheese off but they will happily let you peer into the kitchen to show you how it's done if you ask.

Total cost of our meal for 2 ppl, with a starter of cold meats and 500 mls of wine was CHF 110. Not bad for Zurich.

Note - on the corner outside the restaurant you will find several "working ladies", who hang out from about 6 pm onwards. They are very quiet and won't disturb you on your way to the restaurant - just be prepared to walk past a group of about 10 scantily clad women. Once inside, you won't see them as they don't stand outside the restaurant window.

I have been going to Raclette Stube since 2000 or so. Every time I go to Zurich, I pop in. During the last trip, during the summer, I discovered that the place had changed owners, but the quality -- indeed the menu -- had not altered since the first time I had visited. Even the prices had stayed pretty much even. Their fondue moitie-moitie is to die for and is the stuff of dreams --- it's creamy and substantial at the same time. Hint: drink it with local Kirchwasser or ask for a slightly chilled Fendant. If you have a very sensitive stomach, drink camomile tea after you finish. Never, ever, ever eat fondue or raclette with red wine.
