“Best outdoor swimming in Zurich”
Review of Seebad Utoquai

This is an enigmatic place as it is a bit hip. It attracts a very unusual clientele sort of intellegiencia who sit there and read, others who swim, others who take the sun and there is a naked part too.

There is good and drinks available but it is not cheap. There are lockers for valuables. Be careful though if something falls on the ground, it can potentially falls through the boards and into the Zurich lake.

It is not too crowded as it has no beach so there are few kids here. It is open in all weathers from 7 until 21 I think.

It is quite central and reachable by tram. There is no parking near by so better public transport.

Bad Utoquai is an anachronism. It looks like a place that is more at home in 1920's than 2000's. It's, essentially a fully configured swimming pier with dressing rooms, a freezing cold shower, steps into the lake, and some diving boards. The whole place is broken down into sections - men's only, women's only and a center co-ed area - right next to the snack bar area where you can get a salad, or a brat or something to eat.

It's in Zurich, so it's not cheap, 8 CHF to get in, but as long as you have your own towel, lock, and swimsuit, that's all your pay - for as long as you want to hang out. (They will sell you a lock if necessary, and they also rent out - both towels and swimsuits - but there isn't enough bleach in the world to get me to throw on a used Speedo.)

That said, this is a great thing to do if you catch Zurich on a warm day. It was about 80 F that day, and the water was about 70 F. . so, absolutely perfect. Most of what goes on there is lying around and getting sun, not a lot of competitive swimmers going to the platforms anchored out in the lake and back, but a great way to spend the day.

It really has a wonderful nostalgia to it. It seems like someplace you could while away a whole day with the family - and the kids would remember it for the rest of their lives. There weren't any other tourists there, and not a selfie stick to be seen, just locals.

If you want to relax, get some sun, hang out with the locals and do something that doesn't involve walking or shopping (a tall order when on a vacation). . this is a great option.

When I want to go swim training in Lake Zurich, i go here as it is open no matter what the weather is from until 20.00 every day. It tends to be te last lake side swimming area which closes and has often stayed open until the end of September.

One bad thing is that the floor is made of planks or plats and there have gaps in them. The safe boxes take a 2 CHF piece to lock and it has happened me on more than one occasion that I have opened the door and the 2 CHF has dropped out and into Lake Zurich.

Food and drinks can be had but they are extremely expensive so I have only eaten there once and almost died of a heart attach when I had to pay.

There is a nude bathing section. It is frequented by intellectuals and people who spend the day there dressed and reading or writing. I guess there takes all kinds but this is extremely strange for a swimming area like this.

It is a really must see or go if you want to sunbatch or swim in peace.

Very expensive, overcrowded and unfriendly place. Very hard to find even a place to sit down on hot days. And there are duck-lice in the summer month.

Such a relaxing way to spend an afternoon. After walking all day it was nice to just relax and take a dip in the chilly lake. We got to people watch, read magazines, and they even had food. Keep in mind it's very quiet (in all of zurich really) so there's not a lot of loud talking or music.
