A true gem near Amsterdam

Review of De Durgerdam
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 27 Oct 2024
What an amazing experience this was! The staff were friendly and welcoming, with an eye for detail. We loved our quiet and beautifully decorated room filled with great artwork. The hotel fits wonderfully in cottage style of this small village, Durgerdam, located at an inner sea and only a 20-minute bike ride from Amsterdam Central Station.

We arrived early so we could also enjoy a lively afternoon shopping in Amsterdam's "9 straatjes" neighboorhood. In the evening, we had a wonderful dinner in De Mark, an outstanding restaurant in this beautiful boutique hotel. The next day, after a great breakfast (even for us, spoiled travelers), we took the bike for a ride to the old fishermen's town of Marken.

Our stay and dinner were worth every euro.

Yours words about the hotel and surroundings are lovely to hear. What a great combination with some shopping in the beautiful 9 straatjes, and later to come back to the calm environment of Durgerdam.

We stayed for 4 nights at the hotel and have to say the restaurant is highly recommended. The food is beautifully presented with local ingredients and everything tasted fab. Breakfast portions were very generous and the choice was good. We did 2 nights wine and dine package and 2 nights we ate locally.
If you’re staying for more than a night I’d recommend a car or bike to get around. Uber is available but it’s nice to explore local areas rather than head to the City every day.
Hotel room was nice with a small garden. We were let down by housekeeping and confused over what was covered in the hotel rate and what wasn’t. Hotel rooms are not cheap so our expectations were high and we felt let down. However, we gave detailed feedback directly to the hotel so hopefully future guests have a better experience.
We definitely recommend the restaurant.

Great retreat just outside the city for a mix of city, countryside, and water. Bikes available to rent to bike the countryside or into Amsterdam.

Very good service and food and a well decorated hotel. The staff were always available for anything needed and on site restaurant was great.

Very rude and unfriendly service. If you don't like customers, you shouldn't apply for the tourism industry. Location and village are nice. We were planinning to reserve two weeks stay and try to feel atmosphere with drinks and get to know village by bikes but staf did not give us possibility for that.

Room tip: Avoid the place

- Overpriced overall
- no real /welcome' service
- asked for other pillows - no reaction/service
- Dinner was good
- were more people who would love to have a drink in the sun (finally the sun was shining) and wouldn't open their really nice terrace.
- breakfast good, but way to expensive!!! 40,- for breakfast of 31,- for scrambled egg, 30,- for a pancake !!!
- Tourist Tax ( nearly €40,- !!) Should be a few euros or maybe 12,- p.p max 9 what we could find online for Amsterdam)

Dear Maddy,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are happy to read that you enjoyed your dinner with us. We are very grateful for your feedback, and we will definitely discuss this with the team. The terrace is so lovely, and we love to keep it open in the sun, but since it's so close to the water it gets too windy easily. Hopefully you can come back next time for the terrace.

Our breakfast has high-quality, locally sourced ingredients like Dutch grey shrimps and North Sea crab and we also serve very generous quantities. The price of the breakfast also includes coffee, tea and fresh, home made juices. We understand about the taxes and they have increased in Amsterdam in general (to 12,5% city wide), not just at our hotel.

Hopefully, looking forward to welcoming you back soon & that you enjoy it more next time!
