The experience is different that watching the action on TV. We had never been there and visited once no, so we can say: we have been there.

As part of a guided tour of the Binnenhof (booking possible at the counter of the Prodemos shop opposite the Binnenhof entrance or on-line), we visited the House of Representatives. The house of representatives is located in a modern wing of the Binnenhof; this wing was built expressly for the House of Representatives, when the existing quarters in the historic Binnenhof building became too cramped. By the way, the other house, the Senate, still meets in the historic building of the Binnenhof. To enter the building a security lane has to be negotiated, just as on an international airport. Bags has to be left in a locker and photography is strictly forbidden. What shall I say. It is interesting to visit the House of Representatives and the explanation of the guide was satisfactory, but the total sum was a bit anemic. Some years ago we had enjoyed a splended guided tour of the Palace of Westminster in London, including the House of Commons. Reluctantly I must say, that for tradition and atmosphere the Dutch variety of the House of Representatives can't hold a candle to the British couterpart.

While I was trying to comprehend the guidelines in Dutch in front of the entrance I was approached with a police officer. She was very friendly and helpful but also an indication of good security measures. Once inside there is a security check and all backs must be left in the free lockers. The parliament was having a live session which I followed some time. And it sure would have helped to understand at least something of the Dutch language. Other than that it was a great visit. Free entrance to watch your parliament knowing there is decent security is not something many countries can offer to today.

The Dutch parliament is called the 'Tweede Kamer' (second chamber). You can visit the building and sit in on sessions, but there are also guided tours. Or you can use Streetview to stroll through the building digitally.

This is the center of our democracy, and it gives a really powerful feeling to walk through this building, and see the benches where our representatives 'do their thing'. Book a tour!
