“Surrealism explained”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2012

Belgium can be proud of it's home grown artist and the museum for bringing his story to it's public is a well designed space.

“very cool”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2012

This was a great display of art, and for most Americans at least Magritte is probably not that well known so it is great to see so much of his work in one place. It is very thought-provoking, and frankly it is much more interesting than a lot of modern art (at least for the average art partron who is not an art snob).

“Surprising experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 March 2012

Have been living in Belgium for nearly a year but barely knew Magritte - after today I know this is my fault, not his !

This thoughtfully organized museum (everything in French, Dutch and English, collection split across 3 floors, each covering 'periods' of his life and works) provides a complete overview of this surrealist artist's work. As other reviewers indicate, a number of his greatest creations are not exhibited in this museum - but I never felt this 'downgraded' the introduction to Magritte's provocative, surprising art.

Particularly liked:
> the mysterious, sometimes poetic titles of many paintings - thought-provoking, enticing you to create your own view of what the image means to you
> the many quotes shown throughout the museum - made it clear to me Magritte was a unique, tormented personality with a brilliant, highly lucid mind
> the many groups of school children of all ages (some as young as 8 years old!) being guided through the museum
> the 'biographic' film at the end of the museum tour

Even though I was 'Magritte-oblivious' until today (again, mea culpa), I have seen a fair number of other 'sites and attractions' in Brussels - and I can guarantee this will definitely be a highlight of your visit. Don't 'wallow in ignorance' like I did!

“Fantastic, romantic and well worth the time - Magritte museum is well done”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 February 2012

This museum is right alongside the National Museum in Brussels and a 15 - 20 min walk from la Grand Place. All of the exhibits have displays in French, English and Dutch. Audio tours are available in many languages.

The Magritte portion of the museum is beautifully done with quotes from the man known mostly for his surrealistic style(most people know Magritte for the "Man with the Green Apple" work highlighted in the movie Thomas Crown Affair-the Pierce Brosnan version)

This museum has three floors going through his family life, social life and has photos, sketches, and many of his most famous works.

The gift shop is great--as they have many of his prints available as well as books in English, Dutch, French, Japanese, Italian and Chinese. Would love to return to this museum again one day.
