i have eaten here many times and always had a good experience.
this particular night we just called in for a nitecap on our way back to the hotel.
we had a beer and a white wine and when i asked for the bill i noticed we had been charged €5 for the wine which is way above what it should be.
i don't know if it was because we were tourists or it was late and the barman couldn't be bothered, but i didn't query it and we left some what disheartened.
better luck next time.

We have been living in Portugal for 4 years now. In that period we dinned in many different restaurants, always hoping to find that extra bit that makes a restaurant memorable (and deserving 5 starts), We found it yesterday in A Choupana. The name might confuse, it is certainly not a snack-bar but a real (small) restaurant (although it will never win an interior decoration price). One room of the restaurant has a long bar with bar chairs, while the other room harbors the dinning room. The first you see is a stern looking waiter (we were already looking for the exit) but looks deceive. He turned out to be a very amicable fellow with a wealth of information about the dishes and wines. We had the grilled steak, fried white fish and our son a beef-stew and it was very tasty, The suggested wine (Campo Mayor Reserva 2015) was one of the best wines we tasted in Portugal so far. There was a nice buzz in the dining room, the tables were mostly occupied by local people who were jovially greeted by the patrons and some tourists. The overall effect (good food, good wine, good atmosphere, good staff) made A Choupana into the quintessential Alentejan restaurant: How a typical Portuguese restaurant should be. The bill is just the cherry on the cake.

Followed the employees suggestions and they were all great.

The price is good for the quality, around 10 euros with desert and coffee.

The staff was really nice and the service really fast.

This hidden gem ended up giving us one of the best lunch experiences in Portugal. From Andre's charming chat and service at the bar counter to the fabulous fried fish and great pork and mussels. Just off the main square in Evora, this was a great find. Highly recommended.

We walked past this little restaurant and were somehow confused by the two entrances. However there was a very simple reason: One part is a snack bar and the other part a small restaurant. We went to the restaurant and ordered food from the daily specials menu. What a pleasant surprise. We had fried calamari with a very tasty potato salad, an unbelievable cod fish dish a nice bottle of Alentejo red and finished with a beautiful home made desert.
We found a real surprise, just by coincidence. Would definitely go back.
