A medium sized hotel that is very comfortable and only a ten minute walk to the city centre and fifteen from the marina.
The hotel is around 30 metres from a fairly busy one way street, reception has a subtle Japanese flavour about it which is attractive. Staff are very welcoming and efficient we found all staff very accommodating always seeming only too pleased to help.
There is a very wide selection of foods available at breakfast, certainly something for everybody. For dinner we always chose the buffet which was always of a very high standard with a minimum of a meat, fish or vegetarian dish.
There is a good sized outdoor pool, adequate indoor pool plus a reasonable sized gym, sauna and Turkish bath all surrounded by some well maintained gardens.
Some public areas do look a little dated, browns being the dominant colour, but our rooms had a very comfortable bed, good bath / shower with loads of hot water and a modern tv.
Overall the hotel represents good value, provides comfortable rooms, good food and good staff.

This is a large hotel with an international feel. It is on a main road within a 10 minute walk of the centre of Ponta Delgada. Our room was clean and comfortable overlooking the central courtyard garden. The breakfasts were very good with plenty of choices of fruits, cereals, cheeses and meats and the usual selection of cooked items. We walked in to town in the evenings so can`t comment on their dinners. The staff were always polite and cheerful. I would recommend this hotel if staying for a few days on San Miguel.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the inner courtyard are probably the quietest

We were at this hotel from the 14th to the 17th this month and our only regret is not having stayed for much longer. It is classified as a four star hotel but is better than many 5-star ones I have stayed recently. The staff is wonderful and very accommodating, making the impossible to please the guests. Breakfast is very good, well served and varied, with plenty of fresh fruit. There is an indoor swimming-pool and an outdoor one, too. The restaurants and bars are ample and well-staffed. The night we arrived we were surprised with a typical buffet dinner and a presentation of folk dancing and music. Our plane to Porto left very early in the morning but we had no problems checking out and they had a boxed breakfast for each one of uss. A nice touch. I will certainly go back to San Miguel and stay at the Azoris Royal Garden.

There's a few good things about this hotel but the scale tips into the bad things. Its close to the center, the rooms are clean and in good condition, the breakfast is plentiful but there's a few things that they could replace for other more popular items.
The bartenders in the pool bar are not very friendly. The pool and jacuzzi closing so early leaves us nothing to do to relax after a long day on the tours bus.

We had a feeling, investing in executive rooms, would give us a better experience and holiday. Unfortunately the rooms are facing the one way road passing the hotel, with a lot of noisy traffic. Additional all the busses arriving to the hotel, had their motor running while unloading passengers and luggage. One morning the bus arrived 04.47 am and departed 05.01 and had the mortor running all time.
Don't waste your money on executive rooms with a water view!
Beside this experience, we also faced a breakfast restaurant located in three large rooms with tiles on the floor, windows from floor to the sealing and no blinds or carpets. It was more or less impossible to talk together, due to noise from guests or waiters, unless you were the first guests at 07.00 am.
The staff were very serviceminded and very polite - absolutely no complains here.
Pool area including green area and tennis court were very fine.
Rooms in general, as ordinary older hotel rooms.
I'm not sure if we want to stay in this hotel again!!!
