It's established in the peaceful small town that is a UNESCO world heritage site. The designer of this monastery is undergrounded, also the royal family (king, queen & prince) were buried.

Batalha's unfinished chapels (or in English, the Imperfect Chapels), commissioned in 1437 and still standing strong, are totally dazzling. The cloister gardens are a real delight as well. What surprised me was the sheer size of the monastery, built all those centuries ago. Set a good hour or more aside for the visit. We came by car, from Fatima, en route for Alcobaça, another must visit monastery. We lunched in one of the surrounding restaurants, with a view of the monastery. It's a monastery, so no pets allowed. Also, there are stairs and steps to negotiate, so the monastery may not be suitable for all ages, strollers, etc. Visiting the church is free of charges. One pays an entrance fee to enter the Cloister garden. We took plenty of photos. I only enclosed a few to this summary. Less is better I think.

The Batalha cathedral is a masterpiece of Portuguese architecture and one of the most famous sites in the country. A good idea is to buy the heritage ticket that also includes the great church of Alcobaca and the castle and convent of Tomar.

Ten years ago when I fist visited the Batalha monastery, I was dazzled by its beauty--it was one of the most extraordinary places I had visited in my life. When I was back last month, the magic was still there. It's a 2-hour bus ride from Lisbon's main bus station. It's best to take the 7 am bus which will get you there as soon as the place opens. To return, catch the 11 am bus. You will need 2 hours to see the entire complex with its splendid Gothic church, the cloisters, the exquisite Founder's Chapel, the Imperfect Chapel, etc. Don't be in a rush--you need to linger and commune with the spirit of the place.
