The Gulbenkian is really two museums -- the classic one with ancient Egyptian, Roman and Greek, Islamic, Persian, Ottoman, Chinese, and some old masters up to about 1900. Then, the "Modern" wing offers some very wonderful 20th Century modern art, especially modern sculpture. This museum is easy to view and transverse and you can take it all in under 2.5 - 3.5 hours.

We were very impressed by the ambience of this gallery, which was beautiful inside and out. We also enjoyed sitting in the cafe which overlooks the garden.

Calouste Gulbenkian had excellent taste in art and his collection is one of the best owned by an individual that I’ve visited.

Highlights included a picture of Saint Catherine by Rogier van der Weyden, two excellent Turners and two Rembrandt’s. There is also a lot of applied art and beautiful Persian rugs. The museum is in a quiet neighbourhood in the north of Lisbon. The building is set in beautiful landscaped gardens.

The Foundation also funds modern artists to go and study abroad and has a collection of more modern art, particularly sculpture.

Definitely worth a visit, we were there on a Sunday morning and it was fairly quiet although the public can get in for free from 2pm on a Sunday so probably best to visit before then.

This museum can only be described as awesome. The buildings, displays, gardens and parks are truly remarkable. From the very modern to the very ancient there is something here for all tastes. The spaces are huge so the dispays can be seen really well. Allow a good few hours even just for a glimpse of everything. I am sure you could spend a day in this place it is truly superb. Luch in the beautiful gardens
