Owner description: The National Palace of Sintra, located in the historic town centre, was inhabited for nearly eight centuries by the Portuguese monarchy and its court. It was much used, particularly during the Middle Ages, as a hunting retreat and as a refuge from outbreaks of disease in the capital, or as a summer resort, thanks to the town's more agreeable climate.

Some people may say Pena Palace is tops, or Quinta de Regaleira, but we found that The National Palace had more interesting architecture, furnishings, beautiful tiles and carved wood and history than these others. Admission was less expensive than Pena and much fewer tourists. We spent an enjoyable 1.5 hours covering the entire palace.

Good palace, but not up to the level of castles like Versille, good thing is you can see some royal furnitures and especially the prison of their king. This palace is located in walking distance from the Sintra train station,so you can start your Sintra visit from National palace. One hour is more than enough to cover the whole palace. Royal kitchen was the best attraction for me.

One of the show stoppers of the charming resort town of Sintra is the National Palace. Portuguese royalty have used it since the 1400's. It's got some large, high, cone shaped towers that look a little like witches' hats and many Gothic arches and newer Renaissance towers that add to the attractiveness. The interior is fit for royal habitation with painted ceilings and tile floors. One of Sintra's architectural and historical treasures.
