This lovely victorian tramline runs between Sintra new town and Praia das Macas beach, it only cost €3 for a 45 minute ride along glorious countryside and runs throughout the year (but only at weekends in winter). Bit bumpy but good fun

Sintra the town itself is a marvel but if you have time for a third or fourth visit (or if you are staying in the area) you must take this tram to the beach (Praia das Maçãs) - some of the prettiest beaches of the Lisbon area. It is only 3€ per adult (a little cheeper than the bus from Sintra to the beach). It is not the fastest way to the beach but you'll have beautiful views of the vilas and palaces along the way. The station is half way between the Portela Sintra Station and the Sintra Station at the Vila Alda - Casa do Eléctrico de Sintra at Rua Gen. Alves Roçadas 2 in Sintra. Go to the ticket office to get a ticket first and then go to the tracks to wait for the one car tram. Praia das Maçãs is a interesting beach and town with many restaurants or you can walk to other beaches from here.

Recommended by the guide book we thought we would have a ride on this historic tram. Fortunately we got there early as contrary to the information in the guide book you cannot purchase tickets, on the outward journey, on board. The tram driver was very pleasant and directed us to the nearby ticket office, then kindly suggested we got on board as the number of seats are limited. The journey to the beach takes forty five minutes through beautiful scenery and is another not to be missed experience. After a few hours at the beach we returned to the tram stop to make our way back. On this leg of the journey you can purchase tickets on the tram.

We took a tram on Monday, sonit was not crowded at all. Dont expect luxury travel, tram is really old, route is rocky. But you feel like a child, very exited in it! It costs €3 for a single travel, takes about 40 minutes to the beach. We came back to Sintra by bus 441 as it was faster.
Really worth trying!

Many websites say it only runs weekends, but here on a Thursday and it ran right on schedule. It's a slow trip through time but if you're a streetcar fan don't miss it. The Oceanside village it ends in is attractive and has many good seafood restaurants. Try the grilled octopus! It's 3 euro each way, 2 if you're a senior!
