The trams are I believe American and date from the 1930s. Obviously they are open and a bit rickety but all the more fun for that. The journey is interesting and takes about 45 minutes to reach it's destination at Praia das Macas ( Apple Beach ) where one can wander around and enjoy the sight of the Atlantic Ocean and have a bite to eat.
Tickets from Sintra must be bought prior to boarding the tram at nearby Vila Alda but can be bought from the driver on the return leg. If you don't want to wait for the sometimes infrequent return tram, just cross the road to the bus stop and wait for a no.414 bus which will whisk you back into town in no time.
