Arrived at hotel 11.00am and they got us booked in straight away unfortunately we then had to wait till gone 2pm to get in to our room. On arriving to our room we found the double room we had booked was actually 2 singles when we questioned reception we were told that there wasn`t a double available even though we had booked it and had it confirmed. We kicked up a bit and actually managed to get in to a double room the next day the problem was that there was no real apology on the hotels behalf for the mistake. Room was nice if not just getting a bit tired (5*****?). We had to ask for the bathrobes everyone else seemed to have and when we put them out for washing we never had any replacements. The food was very nice but with plenty of choice but you never actually got a hot meal they were all just luke warm. The hotel itself is very pleasant and very clean and the dinning staff are very friendly. The island is beautiful and everyone should go and visit.
I`m not sure if your under 50 years old that the hotel is for you (we are just) and I certainly wouldn`t take a young family there or may be it was just the time of year.
Weather was very pleasent high teens and sunshine most of the day. We will certainly come back to Madeira but perhaps not this hotel.

I reviewed The Enotel Lido last year giving it five stars as it is such a great place. We returned this year and nothing has changed, everything perfect once again. So I thought I'd give you a few tips to make your visit even better.

As soon as you've checked in, book a night in each of the themed restaurants, there are Madeiran, Italian and Japanese. The Japanese is especially good as the chef cooks in front of all the guests. However, he will cook Japanese food, so if you don't like it - don't go. A couple who sat next to us hardly ate anything and we thought this was rude and a terrible waste.

The 30-40 minute walk down into Funchal is nice the first time, but can get a bit tedious, so buy a 10 journey bus ticket from the kiosk by the bus station, it costs 13 Euros, so works out at £1 a trip which is fantastic value, it's only valid on the yellow buses, but they are very frequent and the stop is a couple of mins from the hotel.

Get the no. 48 bus up to Monte, do this with your bus pass and it's like an hour long tour of Funchal for only £1.

A short walk up the road (left out of the hotel) you will find the Forum Shopping Centre, which is modern and smart. It also has a cinema which often shows the latest films in English (with Portuguese subtitles)

If you go to the hotel out of season, expect to find plenty of guests that might be quite elderly. For some reason, they will queue to be in the restaurant before it opens. This often leads to the restaurant being full early on. Avoid this, by having a drink (or two) in one of the many bars and turn up to the restaurant 45-60 mins after it opens. You'll find it much more pleasant and there's still tonnes of food.

If you're peckish between meals (can't imagine how), the poolside restaurant is open all day.

The gym is well equipped and hardly ever used.

My wife thoroughly enjoyed a massage in the spa.

If possible ask for an inside facing room, all rooms are great, but we preferred facing the pool.

There's good wi-fi all through the hotel (but strangely not in the sports bar).

If you're planning a day out, order a packed lunch from reception the day before. You can pick it up in the morning and it will include, a sandwich, a large baguette, a cake and a bottle of water.....per person. We found it was enough for the two of us. This is free - another reason why Enotel is so brilliant.

My biggest tip though - you must do a levada walk. If you've been to Madeira and you haven't walked along a levada then you might as well not go at all. There are many different levels of walks from the dead easy to the positively scary. All huge fun and very accessible. Go on one of the organised tours first and once you've got the bug, buy the Sunflower book and plan your own. They are the absolute best part of Madeira.

We stayed in this all-inclusive hotel for 10 days. It was a delight. Food and and drink are available 24/7 which is very civilised although less so for the waistline. The reception staff were extremely helpful and courteous and the restaurant staff outstanding. The food was buffet based. I was particularly impressed with the way the food was kept hot and the variety of food on offer, two aspects in which buffets can falter. Also, the staff were extremely diligent in topping up with plates ,knives and forks etc in a busy restaurant. The main restaurant is augmented by three specialist outlets (Japanese, Italian and Madeiran), which we sampled and thoroughly enjoyed. However, do try to book up as early as possible since all tables were fully booked during our first week. The hotel is well stocked with facilities and there is an entertainment lounge with something on each evening. We thought that the local Madeiran folk evening was particularly notable.
Our room was vast, clean and well appointed, no complaints. Here are two suggestions for management to consider: 1. some of the carpets around the hotel were threadbare and are in need of replacement 2. a shuttle bus to the town centre would be a bonus. The bus services (Lines 1 and 2) run every 10 minutes or so and is about a 15 minute ride whilst the walk to the town centre is over 30 minutes. Rather picky comments although great hotels don't remain great by not adapting.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the swimming pool complex are best with a balcony giving an ocean view.

The Enotel Lido does many things well but has one glaring hole in its delivery... Firstly the staff were all lovely, hard working and wanted to please. The facilities are excellent with nice indoor / outdoor pools, spa and gym... plus some evening entertainment better than expected.. some was average! If you like a walk you can can head into the town of Funchal or out to he delightful camara dos lobos where apparently Churchill did many of his painting from... It's a good trek by foot to get there but we did twice there and once back and a really enjoyable event. Where the Hotel lets itself down is the food which isn't 5* or even close... There are three 'specialist' restaurants which delivered a lift in the cuisine to '4*' but not close to what I expected when I booked... The other item that let the hotel slip was the fact you couldn't have a shower at anything like a constant temperature at any time of the day.... Warm, hot, cold... absolute 10 second bagatelle! Also watch out for the glass front that can act as a 'magnifying glass' and you can go from 20 to 40 or more if sat in the wrong place.. be aware! On balance a a nice hotel that can easily up its game on addressing the food quality alone....
