The owner of the apartment had arranged a nice English speaking taxi driver who picked us up at our arrival at the airport. The apartment downtown was a positive surprise. It is as it was shown on Tripadvisor's images. Some furniture had of course signs of being used but one can't request everything to be unused, can one? We made a remark to Johnny (the owner) about the condition of the frying pans and the pans were replaced by new ones the next day. With Carolina, the lady cleaning the apartment every day - except Weekends - we had some difficulties with communication due to our lacking Portuguese language. The apartment location at the old town is superb. Short distances from the house to all the best activities, Farmer's market (Mercado dos Lavradores), shopping streets, all local bus stops, super markets, restaurants and bars, etc. A nice, clean and quiet place to stay for two elderly couples as we are. We could easily had stayed there for a lot longer time than just two weeks. For breakfast we got fresh bread, pastry etc. every morning from the bakery located next house. You have to try fresh Pastel de Nata from this bakery - very tasty. Every second day we made our own cooking and every second day we had dinner at a good restaurant. The best restaurant, to our mined, is definitely Do Forte at just a 5-10 min. walk. Rue Bale Sao Tiago 18 Apt. 1.11 is definitely a place where to stay when visiting Funchal.
