I have selected this quinta on the basis of the reviews I read here, and did not regret, at all! We have stayed 8 nights here with my wife and enjoyed very much. The house is clean and tidy, the furniture is selected with good taste. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. It is great to have the breakfasts on the terrace facing Funchal Bay and the ocean. The quinta has a lovely garden. It takes 30 minutes walk or 6-8 minutes by bus to get to the city center (the bus stop is 50 meter from the house, the time schedule is in the room).
Rita, the host is very kind and attentive and always have a kind word to the guests. She has arranged everything for us, whatever we requested, and she always smiled!
A bonus to the house is a taxi driver, Rita recommended to us, Aires, who is flexible, careful, friendly and speaks fluent English. We had a great levada tour with him and learned a lot about Madeira. He is available at airesafonseca1957@gmail.com

Room Tip: Four rooms face the ocean. The fifth room faces the garden, perhaps it is less preferred, the garden is beautiful though.

We stayed here for 4 nights and had a very enjoyable time. Lovely breakfast and very comfortable bedroom. The owner was in hospital but we were looked after very well by the maid. She was wonderful. We walked into town from the hotel which took about 25mins. We often spoke about getting the bus but never did. Would definitely go back here again and it is highly recommended.

This B&B is so lovely, we returned for a second stay only 2 years after our first visit. The host is wonderful, getting the balance of helpful and welcoming with giving you privacy and peace. Breakfast is served outside whenever possible, with the wonderful view of Funchal below. Have to say the view is better than almost any of the tourist attractions! Breakfast is delicious and fills you up for the day. Guava jam always reminds me of it! The blue room facing the sea is superb. The location is great and the hair-raising bus into town is not to be missed. Highly recommended and hope to return again next year for some winter sun :-)

This was our second trip to Madeira and our first stay at Quinta Sao Goncalo. The pictures are true! This is a little gem amongst the many places you can stay; don't tell the whole world about it. Very homy and comfortable, breakfast is great and can be used on the terrace. It is possible to walk to town........but would not recommend it. Long and steep walk and only for people with a good condition. We will come back to Quinta Sao Goncalo

This is a really great B&B just outside the centre of Funchal with superb views overlooking the city. Nice and friendly staff. Nice room which was spotlessly clean. The breakfast was great, fresh breads and croissants, cold meats and delicious fruits. takes about 30 mins to walk into town but there is a taxi service available at really reasonable costs. We walked up the hill to Zarcos Restaurant for dinner, steep climb but the worth the effort. Zarcos is superb, the food was delicious the view to die for. Highly recommended for a cost effective stay in Funchal.
