It's easy to get to this beach from Porto if you don't have a car. Hop on the tram that departs next to Igreja Monumento de São Francisco, and take it all the way to the end, just past Capela-Farol de São Miguel-o-Anjo. It is then a 10 minute walk to Farol Molhe do Douro and Praia do Carneiro.

Although it was warm and sunny in Porto, just 5.5km away, it was cold and foggy at the beach. The waves were strong and crashing on the lighthouse walls, so it was too dangerous to swim, but quite a sight to behold.

If you plan on swimming here, check the weather reports online before going. Also, bring water shoes; the beach is made of tiny rocks and pebbles that can hurt more sensitive feet :)

There are bathrooms available, and I passed a few restaurants on the way, so you could make a day of it without bringing a lunch.

On a recent trip to Porto the tour bus drove via the beach, we made up our mind to get off the next day and walk along. So glad we did, a boardwalk along the whole length enabled us to walk for a couple of miles alongside the beach, so exhilirating to hear the sea so close, so many areas of beach some with lifeguards, sun beds, etc, around nearly every bend was a bar or cafe, all different. we so enjoyed this for a couple of hours, got back on the tour bus a few stops along. Many people were jogging, exercising on the sands, put me in mind of Venic beach in Santa Monica ! a very pleasant area and not to be missed if you have nice weather in Porto.

We rented bikes from our hotel and took a trip to the beach avenue. We drove by this astonishing place in the evening as the sun was setting down. Very romantic and beautiful place. Good access with bikes also.

Offically the access to the lighthouse was blocked, however we just walked right under the rope like all the other tourists and watched the waves break and the sea pound the rocks. Exellent!
