Hotel Chao Chow Palace, what can I say?

The hotel is less than a stones throw away from the local red light district. Infact it is in the centre of it. This can be a little intimidating for groups of females travelling alone. The hotel itself is a bit of a let down. It may be described as shabby but shique, however more shabby than shique!!!!!

The breakfast was interesting! Continental with also the choice of chow mein or what I can only describe as corn flour and water. No good after too much alcohol the evening before.

The staff were friendly enough, however the lifts are not for neither the largest of people nor the faint hearted.

The main town is only ten minutes walk although the hotel should supply oxygen masks for the underpass required to go through as there is a very strong stench of urine.

What can I say!

It's near the town but even nearer the red light district!! You can look out the window and have an evenings entertainment with the kerb crawlers, and boy racers all hassling the local ladies of the night. This could be potentially offputting to any potential guests returning to the hotel because be warned if you are female it can be intimidating.

The underpass directly across from the hotel has a very distinctive smell and a strong stomach is needed to pass through it.

Hotel is not as clean as it looks on the website. Its decor is a little shabby and dated. The lifts are a dare devil ride in themselves.

Breakfast is somewhat interesting you have to try it!!!!!

Would return to Brussels bit perhaps not to this hotel. But in all fairness the downside to the hotel and the location just made our stay more enjoyable.

We are just home from our trip to Brussels and stayed at the Chao Chow Palace Hotel. It is extremely close to the Gare du Nord or Bruxelles du Nord train station. (Warning: Every place and street in Brussels has 2 names - one in Dutch and one in French)

Because of plane flight times, we arrived at the hotel at 11:00am, and they still allowed us to check in even though check-in wasn't until 14:00. We were given the option of a 'non-smoking' floor which we accepted. The room was definately much larger than we expected so we were very happy. The en-suite shower and toilet facilities were also large, clean and pleasing. Although the iner sheets on the bed were very clean, the outer duvet cover was quite dirty, and hadn't been washed in a little while. This just meant that we slept on the sheets and the heating was hot enough for it to be comfortable enough.

The hotel actually looks over the Bruxelles du Nord train station (we were on the 7th floor) and you can hear the trains arriving every 2-3 minutes. It didn't really bother us too much, but it might annoy others.

Some reviews say that this hotel is at the edge of the red-light district, and others say it is in the middle - the true answer is that the chao chow palace hotel is in the middle. Now don't get worried by this because the Brussels red light district is nothing like that found in Amsterdam. The Brussels version is very much 'watered down' - there are hardware and electrical stores in between the ---- shops, and there are mostly ---- shops, with very few peep show shops or windows with ladies selling their 'wares'. Even the ---- shop window displays are very tame when compared to a typical shop front in Amsterdam's red-light district. We were out quite late during our stay in Brussels, and each night when we came back to the hotel, there was no evidence of 'activity' in the area. We felt very safe at all times and hardly knew we were in the red-light district.

Breakfast is from 7:30-10:00am and we had a choice of cereal, croissants, bread, ham, cheese, butter, jams, etc. There was milk and orange juice (neither of which was chilled!) and tea and coffee. There was also the infamous breakfast noodles which neither of us had the courage (or the stomach) to try!

The bar was very quiet and we were very disappointed to note that it didn't stay open late - it closed at 11:00pm on Saturday and 8:00pm on Sunday. It just meant that we went to city centre bars each night that closed at about 2:00am.

BEER LOVERS! Go to 'Deleriums' - it is in the Guinness Book of Records for stocking the most beers in the world - 2500! And it guarantees to have 2400 in stock at all times.

This hotel is certainly worth the money. Rooms are large and clean. Staff are very friendly and helpful, will supply you with maps and information on sights and attractions. Adequate breakfast, with a choice of chinese food or continental breakfast. Although situated at the edge of the red light district, we did not experience any problems or witness anything off putting. The only problem we encountered was the noise of the trains from the station opposite. Having said that however, you do get used to it. With only a ten minute walk to shops and the grand place, this is an ideal base for your city break to brussels.
