Been back a week now from a truely memorable week at Mikes Hotel in Maleme Crete.
From our arrival and meeting Sophia off the coach, our weeks stay went from strength to strength !
On first impressions, Maleme doesn't really have much to offer !
A main road with a Supermarket, Bakery, Restaurant ,a gift shop, one bar which was open, and a Gyros bar doesn't at first grab your attention !
But head down towards the beach area and bars and restaurants jump out at you as you walk the pleasent waterfront with nicely trimmed grassy areas offering Restaurants serving freshly caught fish, Pork chops to die for, all the local cuisines, Mousaka, Kleftiko et al, finish it off with a generous helping of Baklava and an ice cold Mythos........
jobs a goodun !
My partner and i stayed in the Hotel area of Mikes as there are also appartments situated some five minutes away around the back of the Hotel down a track towards the beach.
The Hotel is tastefully decorated with the bar to your right side when you enter. The Hotel then opens up into the Restaurant area which leads out onto a large terrace to which we both enjoyed many an evening indulging in Mammas gastric delights !
We dined there five of our seven nights, each night there being a Special served as well as the menu of which i can recommend everything !
One tip, take a pair of jeans or trousers a size bigger for your return journey as the portions are mansize !
Raki mixed with Honey is then the order of the day.... mmmmmm !
We stayed on the second floor, facing the main road. There is no lift and in the forty degree heat, walking up them did bring the sweats on !
The rooms are almost English like, bathroom with bath with shower over the bath..... no hole in the floor here !
Dark wood wardrobes, fridge, kettle with cups and saucers, aircon, which is free and a necessity, single beds and a nice size balcony !
The pool is situated a five minute walk away by the appartments.
The pool and poolside bar are set amongst grass sided areas with palm trees which is at it's best late at night when lit up !
Manos, Mikes son, will tender your every need at the bar area as well as plying you with plentyful amounts of Ouzo !
As will the glamourous bar staff.
If relaxation is the order of the day, then this place is for you !
Pizza at the bar are to die for also !
The only downside to my stay here was the beach, situated one hundred yards from the pool, it's not sand but small stone and large pebble once in the water, which are very slippy , and with the waves could cause problems to young children !
People have passed comment towards the rather loud barman (another Mike) across from the pool ruining their peace and tranquility to which this charming hotel does give.
We did venture over to his bar and found him very accomodating, helpful and funny !
Give it a whirl ,you will warm to him, i guarantee !
Also try the Gyros bar on the top road, food is very good and reasonably priced.
Situated next to the Bakery.
So, on the whole, i can't big this Hotel enough,
run by a family who you warm to as soon as you arrive, the cleaner deserves a mention also as your room is cleaned to a high standard everyday !
Buses stop directly outside the front door to take you to Chania.
Car hire is situated just next door, so discovering this wonderful Island is at hand !
We jumped a bus (Chania bound) just fifteen minutes away to Platanias where the beach is sandy and the water bathlike temperatures !
All in all, this place will grow on you the longer you stay here,
we, will most definately return to this gem of a place again, once you've been here, you'll understand why people return time after time.
Only by readind other reviews we ventured here, and every review was true to the letter,
do your self a favour, try it, you won't be disappointed !
So to all at Mikes, a big thank you for a great weeks stay..........
and to Sophia a big Thank You Daaaaaarling !

We aren't normally the sort to return to the same hotel on our holiday as we do like to explore, but the appeal of Mike's for a 2nd time did entice us back to Crete and we were not disappointed. Sophia and Manos both remembered us from our trip 2 years before and the hotel has gone from strength to strength. We both loved the food in the restaurant and spent many a happy, slightly squiffy hour sat round the bar by the pool chewing the fat with other guests. The fact that so many people make return trips to the hotel/apartments really tells you all you need to know - a warm Greek welcome and fantastic hospitality (including a wedding reception during our stay, complete with Greek dancers!) along with the great location (easy to get to Chania and beyond), sea views and the usual Greek gregarious hosting. Everyone who works at Mike's is a delight and really do their best to make you feel welcome. Thoroughly recommended!

Wow, 25 years since our first trip, Maleme has changed as expected - more tavernas in the village and busier but the lovely Paraskakis family are still at Mikes with the addition of lovely apartments. Mike & Helena children Sofia and Manos are taking more of a role in the running of this place - Sofia great front of house in the hotel - consistently better than most other local eateries and great value. Manos (easy on the eye for us girls 'Spike, Oxfordshire') a great host down at the apartments. I must say a special mention to the lovely Maria and Nikki - lots of fun and laughs (often at Manos' expense). Mike and Helena are still involved in the running of the hotel, much of the produce grown by Mike who you's see throughout the day tending to the apartment gardens and his vegetables. The apartments are very clean and adequate for our needs. As for eating - there are other Tavernas but only a few warranted a return visit. Kyma next door offered good variety and service with decent plonk. What Mikes apartments might not match the big hotels and amenities it excels the others in genuine good old fashioned customer service, brilliant atmosphere and a genuine warmth to all who visit. The repeat business is amazing but you are never excluded from the evening congregational around the bar with Dr Manos and nurse Nikkis where the vitamins flowed. Maleme is a good base to explore and you'd be mad not to. Hire a car, preferably a jeep and see the real Crete - this and the people we met on this trip made our 25th Wedding Anniversary so special. As for the loud bar man next door, thank goodness i could take my hearing aid out!

We picked these apartments last year after returning from an excellent Thompsons holiday in Corfu, we used Trip Advisor to find it and we were not disappointed. All the reviews are accurate and the place is a credit to the family who run it as nothing is too much trouble for them. The place is immaculate and we were very impressed with our room, 306, with lovely views over to the sea. I must agree with the lady who left a review just before us, the barman from next door really did spoil the peacefulness and I wish someone would just tell him that his constant repetition of everything that customers order from dawn till dusk is driving everyone MAD!! Coffee-coffee-coffee... ice cream-ice-cream-ice cream all at the top of his voice. Back to Mikes.. the food up in the hotel is outstanding and excellent value, we tended to use the beach bar next door for lunch as a lot more variety and it gave us a break from the mad bar man next door. There are a very limited number of local Tavernas which is a little disappointing, around 6 worth trying. We hired a Jimmy Suzuki jeep from the guy next to the hotel for 150 euros for 3 days and travelled south, well worth a trip. The evening bar scene is terrific all due to Manos and his vitamins and Nikki makes ideal eye candy for the fellas. Top tip, try and get a room on the 3rd floor for the view.

We have just spent a very pleasant week at Mikes Hotel and Apartments. We elected to stay at the hotel. This family run business comes highly recommended. Friendly staff, spotlesssly clean and good home cooking. The apartments which are situated next to the sea are a five minute stroll via the vegetable garden - there you will find an excellent pool , plenty of sun beds and a well run bar which also sells snacks (toasties ,pizza and salads etc.)What ever your choice of accommodation you can use the facilities of the other.
The fact that most guests are returnees speaks volumes for its self .
Truly a FIRST CLASS SET UP.
