We did this as a part of an organised trip and it was great to get active on the active volcano and learn about what Santorini was in the past, the current dormant status and what may happen in the future.

Unique experience visiting the active vulcanic Kameni islands. Take the tour from the new port, to avoid the extra cost, time loss and queue to get down to the old port. The entry of the large vulcanic island costs 2,50 pp so bring small change. In summer it is a very hot no shelter (but fairly easy) walk, so be prepared. It is also very crowded on this island. Totally worth it though, bizar rocks, splendid views, active sulphuric vents. Diving from the boat at the hot springs is great fun! Sailing the caldera gives a good grasp of the enormity of the 1600 BC eruption. Thirissa is very commercial, good swimming on the northern side of the harbour (shelter, see picture).

Great tourist attraction! Must see in Santorini! Great way to spend the day, hiking or otherwise. Fun with your family, or walking around with the kids! Don't forget your sunblock ok!?

The volcano is a must see. We took a boat to the volcano and paid 2.50 euro to get in. There are brochures in most languages to give information on the volcano. We also had a guide that gave us useful information.

In the summer months (august) it is very hot when climbing the volcano. There is lose rock and it is steep.

We recommend seeing the volcano. It isn't everyday you can climb a volcano!

Reasonably easy to walk up, although not a lot to see while you're walking. However view of the caldera from the top is pretty spectacular.
