One of the better things to do when on Santorini. Great experience, especially if you like hiking and such. Definitely physically taxing trying to reach the top of the volcano so know that going in. The views and rock formations are stunning. Worth the short boat ride to get there. A must do!

Located inside the only populated caldera in the world. The vulcano its self is now Nea Kameni. The old core is Palea kameni, and behind them is Thirasia.
In Antiquity it was called strogilli,Thirra, and after the venetians it is called santorini caldera. The last eruption was in 1950 and the next bigg earthquaqe was in 1956.At the core island you will find sulfurous hot springs ,and the active vulcano is within a climb distance. Also the erruption of the vulcano is considered to be the same catastrophy that Atlantida civilisation has be extinguished from and also the Minoan civilisation.the erruption has changed all the Mediterana climate 4 ever.

Not for the unfit or overweight as their is a long climb to the top of this active volcano and there are no services on this island. There are also some guys collecting a 5 Euro per person entrance fee before you can walk up what is effectively a dirt path cut by many thousands of visits since 1956 when it last blew up. The Tour price should have included this and I did not notice the Tour Booking note about not covering this entry fee until I checked after the visit.

The hike is very strenuous , and not easy for those that have difficulty in walking up hill on gravel. Very important to wear sensible sturdy shoes, not flip flops. Several have fallen and tripped. The volcano has active areas where steam will come out and the colour of yellow where Sulphur is present . A few inches below where you are walking on, and the steam is, the ground is very hot. Will see a lot of equipment for checking the gases being released, and activity of the ground, including infrared red to get data that will hopefully let them know a year in advance of an eruption. The guide was amazing. View at the top is awesome.

My girlfriend and I (24yo) did this 3 our tour and absolutely loved it. Wear walking shoes as it's quite strenuous up the volcano with loose rubble. The view from the top is unparalleled and our tour guides knowledge and talk about the volcano was brilliant. After that you go to the hot springs which is a great experience. Amazing natural hot spring connected directly to the ocean that relaxes and soothes! Highly recommend
