The best view of the Senate Square would be from one of the lovely cafes on the square. Certainly, the most comfortable. Would recommend especially during Easter where celebratory gathering will take place.

I visited Senate Square along with the Helsinki Cathedral. I'm glad I did. The grandeur of the Church is amplified by the expanse of the Square. The preparations were partially completed for the Via Crusis the following evening. There was an excitement in the air for the Easter weekend celebration.

This is a must see area of Helsinki.

Senate Square is a place of historical importance in Helsinki. It has been the centrum of the city since it was founded in 1640.

After Helsinki was destroyed during the Great Northern War (1713-1721), German architect Carl Ludvig Engel's decided to rebuild the old main square as a solid neoclassical ensemble.

Among the many buildings, Helsinki Cathedral is the most recognizable landmark. Since 1894, there is a statue of Russian Emperor Alexander II at the centre of the square, to commemorate his re-establishment the Diet of Finland in 1863.

Today, the square attracts tourists and locals and it is a popular spot for art events, concerts, Christmas markets and even snowboard activities.

The Senate Square and its surroundings form a unique and cohesive example of Neoclassical architecture.

The square is dominated by four buildings designed by Carl Ludvig Engel: Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace, the main building of the University of Helsinki and the National Library of Finland.

A statue of Alexander II stands in the middle of the square.

The oldest stone building in Helsinki is the Sederholm House located on the southeast corner of the square. Today the building hosts the Helsinki City Museum.

The Esplanade park and the Market Square are just a block away.

Been 4 years now since I was last there and always impressed of the area and the cathedral too.
Only 10 mins walk from the port/ market area or you can catch the tram 2 and 7 and it will drop you off there too.
