Our room was so small it is almost a bad joke. It makes me wonder if Americans (and other foreigners) who book their rooms not in or near Reykjavik themselves (I used booking.com) rather than through a tour company, may get the worst rooms based on the thinking that we are unlikely to come back to the location or even to Iceland. It likely is a good idea to book through an Iceland travel agent to avoid being given the dregs of the property.

The double bed, which is two twin beds pushed together so more like a queen bed, takes up almost all of the room. There is almost no place to put luggage that won't be a trip hazard. No closet, just some hooks on the wall. The bathroom is so small that there is not even a single towel rack, and ironically there is the standard sign saying to hang the towels that will be used again.. The towels are on shelves below a small platform attached to a wall in the bedroom. The shower is so small that there barely is room to turn around in it.

The gravel driveways to the hotel and up to the rooms behind the main building are so full of holes that significant damage to a tire or wheel alignment is a non-trivial possibility.

The only reason I rate it poor rather than terrible is that the facilities are modern and work well. The room seemed to be well kept and cleaned.

The breakfast is minimal, but most should be able to find enough to eat. The restaurant was a reasonable place for dinner.

Room tip: Not sure if there are any decent sized en suite rooms. May want to ask for one.

Pros:
Really friendly staff.
Close to Skaftafell.

Cons:
The mattresses are too soft, not good for your back after a day of hiking.
Not friendly for smokers- they made us sign a statement which says we need to pay 40,000 Kr if we smoke outside of designated smoking areas. Legit overall, until we found out no rooftop in any of the smoking areas. This is Iceland for god sakes

The hotel, now called Hof Adventure Hotel, is located in a small village miles from everything. The room are quite simpel, but the beds were fine and sleep quality in top. The restaurant was serving very good food, well prepared and very tasty! A nice place for one or two nights.

The accommodation is overpriced and we had to share a bathroom in a cabin which is just a demountable building. It’s hard to drive into if you have a small hire car. What a rip. There isn’t even a TV. Oh and the food is overpriced too.

I stayed at Hof1 twice last year - so I am mainly comparing against those weeks. This time three of of us stayed for 9 days.
The food is so much better now with the new chef! There are only two vegetarian meals - which is a challenge for us staying 9 mights but OK for short stays. You can make up a third meal if you ask for a mixture of mozarella garlic bread salad. The soups were superb as was the vegetarian pasta. Some prototype spinach burgers were OK but due to the (excellent!) home made rolls could be dry/heavy - they just need some refinement with a salad layer I think. Breakfast is now too hectic with the increased numbers - leading to table shortages. This combines with the self-clearing people do just to help fellow travellers get their breakfast to lower the breakfast score a lot. We even brought some fruit as that is one of the main ommissions, along with a better range of Skyr flavours. The one toaster led to toast-queues.

The other main improvement is the new rooms - try to book those as they have much more space and en-suite facilities (and a kettle!). Be aware that there are still spartan rooms elsewhere in the hotel - they are a different experience (and could be a bit cheaper really to compensate). I gather refurbishment of some other rooms is scheduled for 2019.
A nice guest-orientated addition is the fridge in reception where you can deposit things that need refrigeration (as there are none in the rooms). Staff were generally 10/10 friendly - front-desk seemed a bit stressed sometimes and breakfast needed someone clearing tables more attentatively.

Be aware that the nearest "shop" is a long way away - especially a proper supermarket - so bring lunch-making foods that will keep OK. Also note the Foss hote to the East has a nice bar with happy hour! well worth a visit.

I'll probably be staying there again next summer - as the location is perfect for our glacier studies.

Room tip: ask for a newly refurbished room
