Owner description: The Saluting Battery is one of Malta's most vibrant visitor attractions where history is brought to life daily! Located high along Valletta's eastern historic ramparts it enjoys unrivalled spectacular views of the Grand Harbour and its surrounding fortified towns. It is also perhaps the oldest saluting battery still in operation anywhere in the world. Here one can see a fully restored gun powder magazine, an artillery side-arm store, a handsome collection of original muzzle-loading artillery , ammunition and equipment and get a close-look at the saluting guns. The battery is equipped with audio-guides but guided torus in English are also available three times a day at 11.00, 12.30 And 15.00Hrs.

If you are in the area around the time of the cannon firing just hang around and see a bit of history being observed.

We got up close to the noon firing as we had booked a war tunnel tour. Our Saluting Battery guide, Alfred, was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and pitched his talk to all the different nationalities on our tour, often with a bit of humour thrown in. He told us all about the forts and hospital on the other side of Grand Harbour which was helpful as we visited the Three Cities a couple of days later. Well worth having this tour, especially as part of the tunnels entrance fee, and making a whole morning (or afternoon) out of it.

Whilst you can view this for free it is well worth the extra money (for a worthy cause) to experience the firing up close, smelling the gunpowder and getting the detail in your photo of the cannon fire explosion. There is also a tour and if you have a combined ticket you can come back as many times as you want - especially if you didn't get your perfect shot the first time round. The soldiers that take part are all keen, helpful and willing to answer any questions whilst multitasking on the other historical sites as well.

You can watch the ceremony from the balcony for free but a small charge lets you stand. A few feet away from the major? Giving a small talk and demonstration.of setting the fuse and lighting a charge emitting a loud bang ! The area has display stands with 'cannon information'
