Don't hesitate to book with this company--we had an amazing experience with them from start to finish. I did a lot of research into companies offering Northern Lights tours, and was immediately drawn to this one because of its stellar reviews and small-group experience. From my first email, Hannah was extremely responsive. And Jeff was a wonderful tour guide--he is a delightful person, easy to talk to, and super-helpful with everything from advising on camera settings to offering free tripods, to getting us into thermal suits, to making a fire and offering delicious soup and cookies. We drove roughly an hour and a half away, to a remote frozen lake with mountains surrounding it and lots of interesting tree silhouettes. No other tour groups were around there.
We never had to leave that spot, since we got very lucky with the weather (it had been a cloudless day and night). And the lights display was absolutely spectacular, starting from the moment it got dark! Jeff (and other guides we later talked to) said it was one of the best they had seen! It was spellbinding to watch the dancing lights coming from every direction. My photos were stunning--no one in Facebook-land believed they could be real! Jeff is himself a fabulous photographer, and he took lots of photos of us in various poses with the lights as background. All those photos, as well as a magnificent time-lapse video, were emailed to us the next day.
Since Northern Soul Adventures was not available for the other night of our visit, we also booked with another company for our other evening, and also had a great experience with them. My conclusions from these two successful experiences: find a company with a substantial record of excellent reviews; it's definitely worth paying more for the small-group experience (ideally, 8 or under); if you are into photography, make sure you have a guide who can advise you on camera settings and who has tripods to lend; make sure they take photos that they send to you right away; make sure the guide has thermal suits available; look for a comfortable vehicle (ideally one with WiFi, which this van unfortunately did not have, though it was otherwise very comfortable); and look for a tour guide who is a nice person, because you will be spending a lot of time with him or her. And cross your fingers and hope for great weather!
Thank you, Jeff and Hannah, for a truly memorable experience--a real bucket-list item!
