Firstly the hotel is well located and within east walk of the main sights. The public areas are the highlight - all very cool in a 'scandi' way. The downside is the rooms, which look a little dated and are just too small, especially with two people in it. It's fine for a night, but would need something larger for a longer stay.

The black facade, with burning lanterns outside the revolving door gave us the first hint of the atmosphere of the First Hotel Grims Grenka, and it had a unique style, one that we really liked.

You walk into a reception area segregated from a bar and seating space by a huge bookcase, on which we found both interesting 'coffee table' books to flick through plus vouchers and leaflets which enabled us to make the most of our 3 days in Oslo. The area is really dark, with low lighting and has a dark and moody style - in a good way!

The reception staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and always there to assist. The complimentary Nespresso machine in the corner (rather than in our room) was appreciated too as we could head out into the city with a coffee each morning.

The rooms continue the style, with all manner of types of lighting that you can even personalise should you be so inclined. The room is well furnished, and the bed was both enormous and enormously comfortable. The bathroom had a great shower and we liked the glass box style of it, complimentary toiletries were both plentiful and good quality too. We didn't hear anything from neighbouring rooms or other floors.

The roof terrace was closed when we stayed (late September) but we went up for a look anyway and imagine it would be a nice place to have a drink, as was the bar in reception.

Breakfast was a huge array of options, both hot and cold. It is set in Manu, which appears to be a restaurant but wasn't open any evening we were there. If this meant they left it set for breakfast then that was only better for us. The variety was great, the food was delicious and the staff were great. There was also another fancy coffee machine to get your caffeine kick before heading out.

We felt the location was great, near to the metro but frankly just walk everywhere, and get a sense of Oslo. Also worth noting is that the hotel has a 20% discount arrangement with Viking Bike Tours who are two streets away. We did a morning trip with Curtis and an excellent bike tour was even better with a discount!

Overall, a great base, clean, comfy and a great breakfast to get you going!

Room Tip: I can imagine you don't want to be directly beneath the roof terrace when it is open. Floor 5 was perfect!

Some people like trendy, boutique hotels. I thought I did, until I discovered I needed a degree in electrical engineering to operate the battery of light switches, none of which gave me what I wanted. The room needing the most light, the bathroom, was permanently too dark (oh, and a decent mirror might have helped), and the frosted glass wall between the bathroom and bedroom meant that any mid-night visit to the bathroom flooded the bedroom with light as well.

There are mirrors, but these are on the floor and on the main door, for some reason.

The hotel is well located in the centre (but a walk from all public transport stops), and is stylish in appearance from the moment you walk in. Room numbers are marked in strips on the carpet - not a good idea. The staff were friendly and the free wifi worked well.

The breakfast was fine and well-supplied, but the room was poorly lit and, most significantly, had a large artificial waterfall at its entrance, creating the impression that it must be raining outside, when it was not. Chairs scraped incessantly on the stone floors.

So, not for us, but perhaps for others. See the photo of the light switches- I never expected a catwalk! (and never found out what it was, either).

Stayed at Grims Grenka for 3 nights while on vacation in Norway and loved it! Very conveniently located to downtown and the train/metro station. Room was spacious for 2 people and the bed was wonderful. The breakfast which was included was fantastic with a good selection of cold and warm foods and a coffee machine with a good choice of coffee selections. The dining room is beautiful with a cool water feature.
The staff was phenomenal. So very friendly, warm and personable. When we mentioned we could not have breakfast on our last day due to an early train departure, the young man at the desk said he would have the kitchen make us up a meal to take with us, which we did. I would recommend this Hotel and plan to stay here again when we return to Oslo.

Got a very large, beautiful and well-appointed executive double room. Bed was so comfortable it hurts, and shower was amazing. Rooftop bar was either closed for private events or closing an hour early, but there's plenty of options nearby. A few flaws: lighting is almost impossible to work, too many parts broken in the bathroom and a little too much wear-and-tear for a fifth star. Housekeeping was spot on but front desk was a little bemused (are they there to help?!) unless you asked them about nightlife. Breakfast was great with healthy options!
