My wife and I have been visiting Beachy Head for years. On one hand, we are told that sadly it’s cliffs have a reputation for both suicide and accident but in reality for people looking for an excellent day out with terrific views of the English Channel from Eastbourne to Hastings it is a beautiful place to visit. The South Downs are by far one of the most beautiful walking parks in Britain. Follow the rules and read the signs and you will have a safe, scenic and enjoyable visit. Beachy Head has good car parking, regularly maintained public toilets, a pub for a decent lunch and a couple of ice cream vans that seem to be there throughout the year and in all weathers. There is a tourist shop with good amenities and souvenirs. You can choose walks to suit your capability or just picnic. Do have a look at the plaques scattered around on pedestals in the area that explain the views and the related history. Once each year Eastbourne hosts ‘Eastbourne Airborne’ when for a long weekend every type and age of plane is on view and aerial display - including the Red Arrows. Beachy Head is a pretty stunning place to sit, picnic and watch the planes. We try to be there annually. If you go, get there early for parking and do bring seats.
