My husband and I took our three year old here for Easter Sunday lunch - it was gorgeous. All the food was delicious, especially my daughters fish pie. The roast was generous and really well cooked. The desserts were clearly homemade and fab. We loved the fact they could do any of the dishes in a smaller portion for our daughter - gives you such a lot of choice, we willl definitely try and get another meal here during our week long holiday.

A really lovely welcoming old pub, with open fireplaces and comfortable seating areas. The staff are charming and helpful. Overall the food is good, but the attention to detail is variable, and several of our dishes were rather disappointing. Nevertheless would still recommend as a nice place to visit.

Gorgeous pub, good atmosphere, very helpful staff who actually KNOW what the dessert TASTES like! They can recommend different dishes as they’ve tried them. The daily specials on the board are varied every day, with otherwise a really good menu to choose from. Usually families with small children are happily accommodated away from the main restaurant areas, so everyone has a good experience.

Went here with great expectations after looking at the reviews plus our friends previous experience . Unfortunately on this day it did not live up to those expectations . We had an unfortunate experience of having a plate of food dropped as it was served leaving mustard all over my husbands trousers and shoes. Although there was an apology nothing was was offered re cleaning this up , in fact serviettes were offered from an adjoining table , no proper attempt was made to clean the floor. Eventually we got our food however the white bread on two plates was dry and stale, although we complained we were told it was fresh today. On asking at the end if everything was ok and we said no , this was not acknowledged - why ask if they do not want to hear the answer ??? Needless to say we questioned the bill and one meal was deducted. We should not have had to ask for that to happen .
Looking at other reviews perhaps we hit a bad day for food and customer service , which were both poor. Shame this spoilt our visit , not inclined to try again, nor do our friends, such a shame

Hi Sue S,

I am so sorry that our manager dropped your husband's sandwich on his lap. Our manager did immediately offer napkins to clean up the hiking gear. It was a small amount of mustard from within the sandwich and had the gentleman needed more assistance David would have happily helped; being on the gentlemans trousers you can understand we would probably presume he preferred to deal with it himself.

Accidents do happen occasionally, we are all human after all, and we do consider we did what we could to put things right.

The bread was indeed fresh that morning from our local artisan baker in Lymington; David, who is also a trained Chef, cut it himself to speed up the replacement of the sandwich.

The floor we would leave until guests had left as there was so little mess on it, we would, naturally, not want to disturb our guests with mopping and a stone floor is very resilient.

David had already removed the charge for the sandwich when you insisted you would not pay for it; had you looked at your bill before asking for a complimentary sandwich because of the earlier accident you would have seen this.

We do apologise that we made a slip with the plate, this rarely happens I am pleased to say and hope there was no lasting damage to the hiking trousers and boots; being a natural product the mustard should easily wash out of such materials but I do understand that it was annoying and regret that it upset you.

A smallish village pub offering traditional cosy decor with a roaring log fire. Good choice of beers and amazing food using local produce. Large menu so there should be something for everyone (even the most picky eater). Sadly we aren't local; but next time we are in the area we will return.
