This one is a bit complicated and but hopefully will explain the 2* review.

OK was booked in for 2 nights over easter weekend 2018 while we visited family in the area.

The hotel itself is in a nice location and easy to find, check-in was painless and easy. We were in the main block in room 25 on the 1st floor.

Room itself is a bit dated and in real need of a lift. Furniture is quite out of date but is functional. LOADS of power sockets around the room for chargers etc. Shower is very powerful but is a bit cramped and tight to get into.

The biggest problems and for me these are deal breakers for any hotel in my mind.

The walls are paper thin and you can hear everything around both indoors and outside. far too noisy. and the Bed is dreadful the mattress is either very old or of a very poor quality as there is so much roll together into the middle that its almost impossible to get a quality night sleep. In any hotel the 2 most important things are the comfort of the bed and the ability to get a peaceful night. I'm sorry but on both counts this hotel fails.

HOWEVER.

We had some issues with noisy kids running up and down the corridor during the night. Finally management managed to deal with this but not before 3 calls to reception and a visit downstairs to speak to the duty manager.

The following day we spoke to the manager and were given a comped lunch as way of a sorry. This is where the hotel redeems itself. The meal was a carvery but oh my word what a carvery. The options were outstanding. and quality was out of this world all cooked to perfection.

So overall the Rooms are poor with very bad beds but the food is outstanding.

I have stayed in the Barnstable in previous years and felt it could do with a bit of an upgrade. very pleased to see that this has now been done and the public areas and our bedroom were transformed. The staff were excellent and enjoyed meals in both the bar and restaurant. Breakfasts choice was excellent and eggs cooked to order by Chef. I will certainly be booking again next year.

Can’t believe this place has only three stars

Fab food , fab service ...we stayed here as we had taken our children to exmoor zoo which is also a great day out.

May be the only critique would be a external view of hotel and industrial estate location easy to find and plenty to keep you occupied when your inside with the pool etc but inside is fab and staff are great

Had a fantastic meal very busy but food was great and staff made an effort with our kids

Would definitely stay again if in north Devon

My room was in outside area. It felt more like motel than hotel. Room was very cold and drafty. When room doors are closed you can still see light around door (finger thick gap around door). Bathroom has a temperature of north pole, there is a wall heater which couldn't warm up even the towel that is hanging on it. Restaurant and reception area were nice, staff was polite and friendly.

All staff excellent food incredible value and quality, only downsides were rooms had very thin walls and cobwebs across ceiling towards the bathroom door but despite this fantastic we can all miss cobwebs from time to time.Excellent location ,fifteen min walk to town which does have a lot of history .

Room Tip: We stayed in room 7 which did suffer with the music late at night ,but we were prewarned via a phone call ,this I felt was a nice gesture on their part as we could have cancelled, so in my book 10 out of 10 for consideration.
